The Towering Inferno (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Towering Inferno is a 1974 disaster movie adapted by Stirling Silliphant from the novels The Tower by Richard Martin Stern and The Glass Inferno by Thomas N. Scortia and Frank M. Robinson.
The Glass Tower itself was a matte painting in the opening shot, and an 80-foot tall "miniature" fitted with propane gas jets for exterior fire scenes.
In The Towering Inferno, a short-circuit during routine pre-dedication testing causes a power surge which sets a janitor's closet on fire (a scenario closer to that of The Tower); escape by helicopter fails due to high winds, but escapes by breeches buoy to a neighboring 100-floor skyscraper, and an exterior "Scenic Elevator" are more successful.

 Towering Inferno Review
Although U.S. Games got authorization from 20th Century FOX to use the title "Towering Inferno", it is not based on the Steve McQueen film of the same name, as nothing in the manual, game, or packaging would indicate that there is any connection besides the similar theme of a burning building.
These factors all pump up the excitement level of Towering Inferno, but it also means that getting past the upper floors on the the third building and beyond will depend as much on luck as skill.
Like most Atari 2600 games, Towering Inferno loops indefinitely, and the only visual reward for clearing a building is that the next one changes color.

To their credit, the cast members give it their all, despite some pretty weak dialogue—"How long do we have, Jim?" "Bob, I wish I knew." "Dammit, Jim, you built this tower!" The only one who exudes the I'm-seriously-slumming-it vibe is Paul Newman, which is too bad, since this movie is a champ.
