Away from the soul-funk-disco train, there was silky pillow talk balladry ("Every Dream I Dream Is You," "Down Three Dark Streets") and a lightly discofied cover of the Isley Brothers ' "Shout," though it might have been the instrumental "Trammps Disco Theme" that pointed most firmly to their future successes.

But by the time they'd gone through various identities and emerged as the Trammps in the mid-'70s, the lineup featured lead vocalist Ellis, Norman Harris, and Stanley Wade, Robert Upchurch and Young.
Despite their well-deserved reputation and boisterous, jubilant harmonies and sound, the Trammps were never a huge commercial success even during disco's heyday.
But the Trammps' prowess can't be measured by chart popularity; Ellis' booming, joyous vocals brilliantly championed the celebratory fervor and atmosphere that made disco both loved and hated among music fans.

Earl Young of the Trammps told the crowd that it was "family," then urged everyone to "turn around and shake hands with somebody." No, this wasn't a religious service, but the mania for the music was its own religion.
That got boring in a large tent, and the groups that played with human accompaniment fared much better: KC and the Sunshine Band and the Trammps (playing with KC's group), who bookended this three-hour night of nostalgia.
The Trammps opened with snappy choreography and with leader Young ripping impressively through early hits "Disco Inferno" and "Hold Back the Night." King worked hard in her set (highlighted by "Shame" and "I'm in Love"), but again, the canned backup hurt her.

 The Trammps, by Bill Pollak
Cult favorites of the early disco underground, the Trammps were an exciting and innovative vocal group whose exuberant dance records helped ignite the disco explosion of the 1970s.
Building respectfully on the models of the past, the Trammps added a Philadelphia dance beat to 1950s doo-wop to create some of the strongest vocal-group records of the 1970s.
The key elements of the Trammps unique sound were the hard-edged soul shouting of lead singer Jimmy Ellis and the deep, pumping bass singing of Earl Young, who doubled as the drummer for TSOP (the sound of Philadelphia), the extraordinary rhythm section behind the great Gamble & Huff-produced Philadelphia sound of the 70s.
