 About The Troggs
The Troggs are a rock band that originated in the 1960's in a small town called Andover in Hampshire, England, west of Basingstoke.
The Troggs are also notoriously well-known for a bootleg tape of them swearing at each other during a recording session.
The Troggs possess a raw energy that still draws fans to their music, and many of their ballad-style songs have a softer edge that is more sophisticated than The Troggs are generally given credit for.

Hailing from the relatively unknown British town of Andover, the Troggs hooked up with manager/producer Larry Page (who was involved in the Kinks' early affairs) in the mid-'60s.
In the hands of the Troggs, "Wild Thing" -- with its grungy chords and off-the-wall ocarina solo -- became a primeval three-chord monster, famous not only in its original hit Troggs version, but in its psychedelic revamping by Jimi Hendrix, who used it to close his famous set at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival.
The Troggs' image as lunkheads couldn't have been helped by the notorious Troggs Tapes, a 12-minute studio argument that was captured on tape while the band were unawares.

 The Troggs
The Troggs, hailing from the brick-laying town of Andover, were at the same time an anomaly for British rock of the Sixties and a standard, typical case.
In the Troggs' defense, it should be said they actually developed as songwriters, and that the number of songs penned by Reg Presley and Co. steadily increased over the years; but few of them go over "moderately catchy" anyway.
Although, granted, had the Troggs formed in the Seventies, I'm pretty sure they'd be marketed much better than they actually were: by the end of 1967, they were nothing but a bunch of had-beens as far as their commercial success is concerned.

The Troggs began their run of chart hits with Wild thing, a novelty song that reached number two in the UK but topped the charts for six weeks in America.
For our purposes, the Troggs' ballad goes one better, serving as a steady conduit by which the sense of eternity which expressed itself in late-sixties music and culture can still be heard and felt (especially by many of those who lived it).

Although all but one of the tracks was a Troggs original ("Hip Hip Hooray" being the lone exception), and although there were a few solid cuts, overall it was disappointing due to the weakness and surprisingly low energy of many of the songs.

The problem with the Troggs is that once you get past "Wild Thing" most people will be hard pressed to name another song the group recorded and the best offerings here are certainly not similar to "Wild Thing" in sound.
So the big irony with the Troggs is that their signature song is the musical exception to the group's sound.
