  UCL
UCL was founded in 1826 under the name "University of London" as a secular alternative to the strictly religious universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
UCL’s newest buildings include the London Centre for Nanotechnology on Gordon Street, aimed for completion in 2006 and a new building for the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (formerly at Senate House) which was opened (by Princess Anne and the President of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Klaus) in October 2005 on Taviton Street.
UCL is often referred to by students from the latter using nicknames such as the "Godless Scum of Gower Street", in reference to a comment made at the founding of KCL, which was based on Christian principles.

The UCL Bloomsbury Theatre is a theatre on Gordon Street, Bloomsbury, Camden, London, owned by University College London.
Funded by a UGC grant and a considerable private donation, the theatre was opened in 1968 as the Collegiate Theatre, and was renamed the Bloomsbury Theatre in 1982.
UCL alumnus Ricky Gervais has performed two of his standup shows in the theatre, where they were also filmed for release on DVD.

The Unit's main aim is to develop and apply state-of-the-art mathematical and computer science techniques to problems now arising in the life sciences, particularly those now appearing in the post-genomic era.

Professor Mervyn Singer and Dr Paul Glynne of UCL's Bloomsbury Institute of Intensive Care Medicine are seeking to understand why mortality rates of 21st century patients suffering from critical illness still remain high despite the major technological advances of modern medicine.
Speaking at a lunchtime lecture in UCL recently, Professor Singer said that of the 52 survivors of the 13th Light Dragoons injured by sabre, gunfire and canon at the Battle of Waterloo, only three died.
UCL's lunch hour lecture series takes place twice weekly in the first two terms of the academic year.
