The churning Hiberno punk of their first album, "The Undertones" (1979), quickly gave way to the bouncy guitar-pop of 1980's "Hypnotised," and while their audience decided to indulge them in it, ripples of discontent were already beginning to echo back and forth among the critics who'd championed them.
The Undertones were too innocent, too credulous to be cool, and songs that in other, cooler hands would've been kitschy and unpalatable are, in theirs, delightful.
The entire Undertones catalog was quietly reissued by Rykodisc beginning at some point in 1994, with each of the four albums in the series featuring four to six bonus tracks culled from single B-sides and EPs.

The best band ever to come from Northern Ireland, the Undertones took youthful adoration for glam-rock and gave it the stripped-down simplicity and energy of punk to create truly wonderful albums of pop/rock (and, toward the end, soul) with a difference.
The Undertones — without Sharkey — reformed now and then in the '90s for the occasional show, but got more serious in 2003, when the four original players recorded a fine new old-fashioned album, Get What You Need, with Paul McLoone as their singer.
He sounds like a bit of a Feargal clone on record (less so in person, where his rock star confidence mildly undercuts the boyish insecurity of the old songs), but that contributes to the familiarity of the sound, which is a good thing.

It combines some truly superb archive shots of Derry in the seventies and intersperses it with contemporary shots of the band in the old locations.
It`s a strength of the film that it deals candidly with the political situation of the time, and amply shows why The Undertones were often victims of simply coming from the wrong place at the wrong time.

The '79 debut LP, The Undertones, is the true best-of.
That is even more true since Ryko's 1994 reissue added four great B-sides, and best of all, all three other tracks from the debut '78 Teenage Kicks EP (the one that makes John Peel cry when he hears it on the radio, which is completely understandable), including the restoration of the original True Confessions.
And not only is this a great introduction, but the die-hard old Undertones' fan still might want to get this: It's entertaining to listen to, as it touches all three distinct periods -- the Undertones, like their heroes the Clash and Buzzcocks, were adamant about never repeating themselves LP to LP on the same disc.
