If you were to ask people who've just witnessed an Unforgettable Fire performance how they would describe what they saw, they would most often use the word "amazing." Unforgettable Fire (or UF, as our fans call us) is believed by many to be the closest thing to being at an actual U2 show.
Unforgettable Fire, The U2 Tribute Band, is exactly that kind of band - a well oiled machine, as we would like to say.
Unforgettable Fire started out in the fall of 1994, when founding members Joe Shugrue (The Edge) and George Levesanos (Larry Mullen, Jr.) decided to form a U2 tribute band with the goal of presenting an authentic, high-energy show with major production behind it.

 Eye - The unforgettable Fire - 09.09.04
Should Montreal's Arcade Fire ever reach a similar level of head-shop souvenir immortalization -- and their rapid ascent to national indie treasuredom suggests "why not?" -- this is what you'll see silk-screened on the t-shirt: a shot of Win Butler in his finest Bible-student duds, wide-open mouth frozen in a scream that rings forever.
The Arcade Fire don't so much play songs as build upon mise en scènes, carefully establishing a richly elegiac mood and environment, before Butler and wife Regine Chassagne's increasingly impassioned and frantic vocals shatter the serene surface to reveal the restlessness and tension stewing underneath.
Sure, you could accuse The Arcade Fire of pulling on the heartstrings a little too forcefully, but sometimes, you need to do the obvious to reach out to the oblivious.

It was within the next moment when they met in the air, eyes never leaving each other, prides in their techniques evident as they failed not to bring out a gruesome match that consisted of blood and fire, of dark auras and even peace and friendship.
Yusuke merely grinned, getting out of the way of the raging makai fire in the last second, appearing on the back of Hiei and hitting his head with a power unborn of his humanity.

Comment: "The Unforgettable Fire" commences U2's post-"War" direction and what a direction it is. It's first with production team extraordinaires Brian Eno and Daniel Lanios, this album includes some excellent cuts such as "A Sort of Homecoming", "Pride (In the Name of Love)", "Wire", "Bad", and the title track, "The Unforgettable Fire".
The mood on "The Unforgettable Fire" altered significantly from "War," as the moody "A Sort Of Homecoming" found U2 switching to a subtle approach that had only been hinted at on their prior three discs.
The Unforgettable Fire would go far beyond the attempts of war, changing the sound completely.

Last week - as The Arcade Fire prepared to play the final three shows for its Funeral album, all opening for U2 (yesterday in Ottawa, today and Monday at the Bell Centre) - Butler sat in a Mile End cafe and, with distracted serenity, put things in perspective.

There, Arcade Fire were confronted by their biggest ever audience, who greeted their songs with jubilant abandon, more befitting of hymns and anthems etched deep in the public consciousness over generations than the fledgling repertoire of an arty rock group from Canada.
Imagine those two singers in an imaginary supergroup with U2 circa The Unforgettable Fire and a Romany folk ensemble, and you're somewhere near to envisaging the wonderful sound of Arcade Fire.
Inevitably, the relationship at the creative heart of Arcade Fire, the marital one between Butler and Chassagne, is the one that's liable to arouse a great deal of interest in the months ahead.

However, their fourth album, The Unforgettable Fire, is a horse of a different color.
That might be the one downfall that causes The Unforgettable Fire to be viewed as more of a stepping stone between War and The Joshua Tree rather than a great album in its own right.
Especially in its second half, it's easy to see that The Unforgettable Fire is better viewed as a series of separate thoughts rather than a cohesive single statement.

Over the course of three studio LPs and one live-in-concert item, this stormy Irish guitar band, borne aloft by its grand, anthemic roar and an earnest concern for social issues, had ascended to the verge of substantial rock stardom in this country.
Unfortunately, with The Unforgettable Fire, U2 flickers and nearly fades, its fire banked by a misconceived production strategy and occasional interludes of soggy, songless self-indulgence.
The Unforgettable Fire seems to drone on and on, an endless flurry of chinkety guitar scratchings, state-of-the-art sound processing and the most mundane sort of lyrical imagery (barbed wire is a big concept).
