Topic: The Uplift War

Uplift Universe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This civilization is perpetuated by the act of Uplift, in which one sapient species genetically modifies a non-sapient species until it is sapient.
The fact that Humanity had already uplifted two species when it encountered the galactic civilization gave Humanity patron status, which is one of the few lucky turns it has had in its difficult position as pariah in the galactic civilization.
In the Uplift Storm trilogy, survivors of the space ship Streaker continue to evade the various galactic powers and along the way encounter a hidden planet where the inhabitants have avoided most of the uplift schisms which plague the galactic civilization.

The (Any of the celestial bodies (other than comets or satellites) that revolve around the sun in the solar system) planet Garth has been invaded by the longtime Patron race known as the Gubru.
The Gubru have also heard that a new species on Garth is almost ready to become uplifted, and they look to become the patrons (sponsors) of this species.
Opposing the Gubru's effort is one human (whose race views the patron-client relationship as so much (The practice of owning slaves) slavery) and assorted neo (uplifted)- (Intelligent somewhat arboreal ape of equatorial African forests) chimps.

 Errors in the Uplift Universe
In Uplift War, Chapter 4, Robert, p.19, the Sundiver incident and the Dolphin Uplift are mentioned as happening 2 centuries before the invasion of Garth.
In Uplift War, Chapter 60, Uthacalthing, p.400, 12 sistaars is a unit of distance that may be crossed by a walking humanoid.
Since in the Uplift Storm Trilogy dura (including a midura = 71 minutes, see the Timeline of Jijo for details) is consistently used as units of time, and the mictaar is used as unit of distance (in hyperspace), I suspect Uplift War was reckless with the nomenclature, and it changed between the two "trilogies".

David Brin's Uplift series is among the best-known in Science Fiction, and with good reason.
The series takes place in a universe where all sentient races are "uplifted" by other patron races, who breed and cultivate their client races for intelligence.
The Uplift War focuses on the invasion of a human-colonized world by a senior avian race, and combines the appeal of many war movies, where one roots for the ingenious underdogs, with a bit of political intrigue, some human drama, and a good dose of humor.

All the millions of starfaring species have one thing in common - they were 'uplifted' to sapiency by species that came before them by genetic engineering, who were themselves uplifted by those before them, in a chain that goes back billions of years.
In the first Uplift novel, 'Sundiver', humans discover life in the sun, which is not even mentioned in the Great Library all other sapient species go to for knowledge.
These are of great significance to a lot of fanatical galactic races who go to war over the right to capture the dolphins and the information they have gathered, while the dolphins try to escape.

War on the news, war in science fiction, Tony Chester finds it increasingly difficult to find where is the dividing line.
According to SF the toys of war would get ever more sophisticated with the apparent aim of somehow rendering war a 'cleaner' enterprise, with a concordant reduction in the loss of innocent (ie.

The Uplift War is the third book in the Uplift saga, and it may be difficult to jump right into this story without having read either of the first two books, Sundiver or Startide Rising.
However, humans are begrudgingly given patron status since they had unknowingly followed a tradition which had been around for eons, and uplifted two client species of their own into sentience, chimpanzees and dolphins.
Most of the humans are killed or captured, so the only hope left is for the remaining uplifted inhabitants of Garth to form a resistance and reclaim their world.

 David Brin's Uplift Universe
Through this central theme of his Uplift Universe, and dozens of other rich details, Brin has managed to create one of the most 'realistic' and engrossing series of science fiction books ever written.
In the Uplift universe, humanity is the underdog, millions of years behind the rest of the galaxy in technology.
Sundiver is a very good novel, but I get the feeling that it's meant to be a standalone novel, and it survives perfectly well on its own, thank you very much.

 Emerald City - #21
In contrast, in The Uplift War, most of the human population of the planet Garth is captured and imprisoned early in the book.
Given that the process of Uplift is the major religious activity of the galaxy (essentially it is following the example of the God-like Progenitors), it is therefore a particularly serious felony to eliminate any species that might, one day, become sentient themselves.
The Uplift philosophy is thus a profoundly environmentalist view of the universe.

In the second book in the Uplift Trilogy, Infinity's Shore, it is truly the beginning of the end for the fugitive settlers of Jijo.

We first encounter him working with a newly-uplifted dolphin (uplift being the process of genetically enhancing a near-sentient species to full sentience) -- but he is called away from this job to join the Sundiver project, a Mercury-based expedition to explore the sun -- and it turns out life has been discovered there.
It serves as a great introduction to the Uplift saga (currently at six books; it's unclear whether Brin will write more); but it also works very well indeed as a stand-alone novel of mystery and science, of one man and his mental health, and of humanity's place in the cosmos.
The whole idea of dolphins crewing a starship is just lovely, and "The Uplift War" highlighted one of my fave alien species--the avian Gubru, with their three castes/genders.

I have heard rumours that the Uplift Series is going to be made into a film.
The first three books in the saga, "Sundiver," "Startide Rising," and "The Uplift War," are not really a trilogy or a series in the normal sense.
The Uplift War: The events in this book start from the same event that kicks off "Startide Rising." But, other than that, the two books are totally independent.

The "new" uplift trilogy now unfolding (beginning with Brightness Reef), however, will be a true trilogy, with none of the books standing on their own.
An entire galactic civilization is presented wherein uplift is a common practice, and a species' status is based on the number of "client" races they have successfully uplifted.
The Uplift War is a spectacular adventure book that stands on its own and may be more fun to read than Star Tide Rising, but Star Tide Rising is certainly a more important book.

Briefly, this universe is one where species are Uplifted to sentience by the genetic modification and guidance of another species.
The chain of Uplift is thought to extend back to semi-mythical Progenitors; the only exception found within eons is the human race, who appear to have Uplifted themselves—something which earns them the scorn and enmity of many.
By the time humans are discovered by the rest of the Five Galaxies, they had begun Uplifting chimpanzees and dolphins.

The Uplift War is called the 3rd book in the Uplift saga, but it is not a sequel to the 2nd book, Startide Rising (S.R.).

The visitors include the dolphin crew of the ship Streaker and the Rothen, the race who may have "uplifted" to intelligence most of the races of Jijo, except the humans, who because of their unique status are in greater peril than ever.
The uplift saga has to be one of the greatest achievements in science fiction writing, and deserves recognition from mainstream literary critics.

David Brin: Infinity's Shore - an infinity plus review
I mean, if you take the Uplift War books to date, only the first (Sundiver) and third (The Uplift War) have any kind of satisfactory resolution.
The others all have either temporary resolutions (the dolphin-crewed starship Streaker escaping into the depths of space at the end of Startide Rising), or outright cliffhangers (like the fate of the main characters in their home-built bathysphere at the end of Brightness Reef, severed from their lifeline and about to be eaten by a monster).
If he carries through with the story in Heaven's Reach, and pulls off a satisfactory conclusion to the whole sequence, then the Uplift War series will deserve to be racked alongside Dune and the other great epic SF works of the past.
