The book promised that profits would be distributed "80% to SAVE THE CHILDREN FUND and OXFAM for famine relief and 20% to Charity Projects to support young people faced with the problems of drug abuse, homelessness and disability here in Britain."

The books were sweet, the BBC series was sweeter, and I believe the recent movie captured well the strange creatures and circumstances of Hitchhiker's Guide.
The third part of the book is another prime reason to save it for last, as it contains the beginning to the third Dirk Gently novel that Adams hinted may in fact be turned into the sixth Hitchhiker book instead.
That's all folks, no more, you can wait for another book if you'd like but I fear it won't be coming, rather depressing but ultimately you know once and for all that you've reached the bittersweet end to the works of Douglas Adams, and must wonder about what you should start reading now.

I thought some of the longer speeches in the middle section of the book sounded forced and were not as clever as some of the others, but still, they were great.

The character Richard is reading the telephone directory, is distracted, and his colleague Kate suggests that the reason phone books keep you guessing until the end is that "Zbiginew did it." This could just be a case of an interestingly spelled name at the end of the alphabet, and I can accept that.

Not quite up to the standard of the first two books in the series, Life, the Universe and Everything is nevertheless clever enough and funny enough to be essential for fans of the earlier novels.
One of my favourite parts of the book is that describing the alien with a chip on his shoulder: Bitter about the treatment he has received from his fellow space creatures, he makes it his mission to personally insult every living organism in the universe.
Aside from coming up with the idea of the Hitchhiker series, I think this book is Douglas Adams at his very best – the notion of bistromathics (eating in a bistro allowing you to travel vast distances) was quite hilarious.

It is unbelievable that the various chapters of the book have not been given individual track numbers.
For my own use, before I could bear to listen to this audio book, I had to rip the entire 7-disc set and segment it so I could handle it in reasonable chunks.
This is inexcusable and irritating, especially for an audio book that retails for $45.

Not unexpectedly, a couple of AICN's legion of readers were in the audience for last night's test screening in LA and the site has posted a double review (the first is relatively spoiler-free, the second has spoilers).
As somebody reasonably familiar with the books, the first reviewer professes himself 75% satisfied, being mainly critical of the acting rather than the adaptation or production.
Douglas Adams' American publishers have evidently decided that the movie tie-in covers are too wacky and have produced these editions of books 2 to 5 which will be published by Del Rey in April.

This had nothing to do with Christmas except in an early draft (which would have had Marvin the Paranoid Android revealed as the "star" followed by the Three Wise Men); it was called the Christmas Episode because it was first broadcast on December 24, 1978 (Christmas Eve).
The BBC has broadcast an adaptation of the final three books in the Hitchhikers series for radio with the surviving members of the original radio cast.

This list of Douglas' UK works is far more complete, but I'm still open to correction if you spot any mistakes.
Douglas' work has been translated into umpteen languages, and if you go abroad might like to look out for copies, especially as evry country gives the books completely different covers.
