  AnneRice.Com: The Vampire Lestat
Breaking the vampire code of silence, Lestat reveals himself to the world in the hopes that the world's immortals will rise and join together to solve the mystery of their, and his, existence.
Lestat circles Europe searching for his origins, and for clues to the birth of the vampire, but he finds that the seminal answers elude him.
Through his travels and searches, Lestat also makes enemies of vampires who are terrified that his wanderings and searchings will disrupt their coexistence with mortals, or that he will attempt to rule them all.

  The Vampire Lestat
Lestat soon learns she has dangerous intentions of making all out war against humans and he vows to stop her by trying to make mortals aware of the vampiric threat so that they can be prepared for her assault.
Lestat also "inherits" the accumulated wealth of the vampire who transforms him and his wealth only continues to grow, as does the material wealth of most of the novel's other vampire characters, due in part to their longevity and to the emerging capitalist system.
Lestat relates, "The taste of blood and the feel of blood, and what it meant for all passion, all greed, to be sharpened in that one desire, and that one desire to be satisfied over and over with the feeding and the death" (156).

The Vampire Lestat is a novel by Anne Rice, and the second in her Vampire Chronicles, following Interview with the Vampire.
Set in the late 18th Century to the late 1980s, the story follows the 200 years long life of the vampire Lestat, and his rise from humble beginnings as a penniless aristocrat to become the "Brat Prince" of the vampires.
Lestat explains that as a young man of 20 years, he was a rebellious and frustrated youth, the youngest son of the Marquis d'Auvergne, and the sole provider of meat for his family's table.

 The Vampire Lestat
With the same richness of drama, atmosphere and incident, she tells the fantastic story of the vampire Lestat, whom we first perceived as the seductive devil-vampire of Interview with the Vampire and whom we now follow through the ages as he searches for the origin and meaning of his own dark immortality.
As the novel opens, Lestat, having risen from the earth after a fifty-five years sleep, and infatuated with the modern world, presents himself in all his vampire brilliance as a rock star, a superstar, a seducer of millions.
Of all the Vampire Chronicles, The Vampire Lestat was the most difficult for me in every respect, but it is interesting to me now - in fact, more than interesting - that many readers say that this book is their favourite of all the Chronicles.

After the spectacular debut of Interview with the Vampire in 1976, Anne Rice put aside her vampires to explore other literary interests--Italian castrati in Cry to Heaven and the Free People of Color in The Feast of All Saints.
The remainder of the novel purports to be that autobiography: the vampire traces his mortal youth as the son of a marquis in pre-Revolutionary France, his initiation into vampirism at the hands of Magnus, and his quest for the ultimate origins of his undead species.
The character of Lestat is one of Rice's most complex and popular literary alter egos, and his Faustian strivings have a mythopoeic resonance that links the novel to a grand tradition of spiritual and supernatural fiction.

Suffice to say that, in the first person, we meet Lestat, the teenaged son of an impoverished 18th-century nobleman, whose life is at best cold and harsh, at worst, a constant battle with cruelty of every sort for one's mere survival.
Lestat, in Louis' personal account (in "Interview with the Vampire"), is arrogant, materialistic, calculating and callous.
Lestat is also better able to describe the astonishing grace and unimaginable horror of being a vampire; lending benevolent explanation to some of the events in "Interview with the Vampire" that seemed so viciously heinous to Louis and Claudia.

In the early pages of The Vampire Lestat, Lestat himself is handed a copy of Interview with the Vampire, which he reads a number of times, then destroys utterly.
Nine years after she virtually created the modern vampire novel, she drops what can only be described as a bombshell—twice as long as Interview with a Vampire and many times wider in scope, it carries intricate histories of both individual vampires and the species itself.

I read ‘Interview with the Vampire’ by Anne Rice years ago, and thought I’d read it again a few months ago.
It’s a great, dark, mythical tale that delves into the ancient past of vampires, but it’s main strength is the vivid character development of the various vampires.
Having said that, Lestat is an almost entirely different character in this book to the Lestat we grew to hate in ‘Interview with the Vampire’.
