this tape is the same tape that all the college coaches have in their office and watch to evaluate the player.

Even the cover art ties into the rock 'n' roll muse, referencing the first full-length Elvis Presley album, with its hot pink and green cover lettering...but where Elvis' cover showed him singing and making noise on his axe of the moment, Clash bassist Simonon is pictured wreaking a different kind of havoc on his instrument.

 THE CLASH - London Calling + The Vanilla Tapes - The Final Word
For a Clash nut like me, once the treasured bootlegs worn thin, the prospect of even more of their seminal "London Calling" is a mouthwatering prospect.
In effect "The Vanilla Tapes" are the band bootlegging themselves : the musical quality is mixed, the recording is cheap and would've stayed in the vaults had time and legend not been so kind.
"The Vanilla Tapes" then, all quibbles aside, is a record that would never have seen release had either Strummer been alive, or CBS not wanted to fleece the faithful.
