The Velvet Underground was one of the first rock music groups to experiment heavily with the form by incorporating avant-garde influences.
The Velvet Underground spent much of 1969 on the road, feeling they were not accepted in their hometown of New York City and not making much headway commercially.

At the outset, the Velvet Underground provided the live music for US artist Andy Warhol's touring multimedia shows called the ‘Exploding Plastic Inevitable’, with another of his protégées, Nico (Christa Paffgen, 1938–1988) sharing the vocals;; after the first album they broke with Warhol.
Reed ousted Cale in 1968, dominated the third album, The Velvet Underground (1968), and left the band in 1970 during the recording of Loaded;; the final line-up contained none of the original members.
A Velvet Underground reunion took place with the original line-up in Paris in 1991 and led to a European tour in 1993.

One of the most remarkable things about the Velvet Underground’s body of work is that, though they have an immediately identifiable sound and style, no two of their albums seem at all alike.

Lots of people claim they love the Velvet Underground, but don't know shit about the band; other people say they hate the Velvet Underground, but end up admitting they had their value, too (just look at Prindle's page of VU reviews and tell me he didn't get messed up on there).
If anything, the Velvets are great because they did things that no one else ever dreamt of doing before them - either because these things were too simple or because these things were too complicated.
As for the Velvets themselves, my collection is fairly limited - as of now, I've only got the standard 'classic four' of their original studio recordings and can say nothing of the endless stream of live albums or the VU outtake collections, not to mention the box set.
