  The Velveteen Rabbit
The Rabbit could not claim to be a model of anything, for he didn't know that real rabbits existed; he thought they were all stuffed with sawdust like himself, and he understood that sawdust was quite out-of-date and should never be mentioned in modern circles.
He took the Velveteen Rabbit with him, and before he wandered off to pick flowers, or play at brigands among the trees, he always made the Rabbit a little nest somewhere among the bracken, where he would be quite cosy, for he was a kind-hearted little boy and he liked Bunny to be comfortable.
And she came close to the little Rabbit and gathered him up in her arms and kissed him on his velveteen nose that was all damp from crying.

Given as a Christmas gift to a young boy, the Velveteen Rabbit lives in the nursery with all of the other toys, waiting for the day when the Boy (as he is called) will choose him as a playmate.
In time, the shy Rabbit befriends the tattered Skin Horse, the wisest resident of the nursery, who reveals the goal of all nursery toys: to be made "real" through the love of a human.
The rabbit is told by an old skin horse about the wonders of one day becoming real, and it becomes the rabbit's deepest wish.

 The Velveteen Rabbit
There was once a velveteen rabbit, and in the beginning she was quite splendid.
The Velveteen Rabbit went everywhere with the Little Boy, especially into the garden where the boy made nests and burrows for her to play in.
One evening, while the rabbit was lying there alone, watching the ants that ran to and fro between her velvet paws, she saw two strange creatures creep out of the bracken nearby.

HERE was once a velveteen rabbit, and in the beginning he was really splendid.
He was fat and bunchy, as a rabbit should be; his coat was spotted brown and white, he had real thread whiskers, and his ears were lined with pink sateen.
For at least two hours the Boy loved him, and then Aunts and Uncles came to dinner, and there was a great rustling of tissue paper and unwrapping of parcels, and in the excitement of looking at all the new presents the Velveteen Rabbit was forgotten.

Combined with the unassuming and tasteful playing of George Winston, the project was even extended to a PBS special that garnered a 1986 Grammy Award Nomination.
The actual story revolves around an old-fashioned stuffed rabbit that grows old while his owner, the boy, grows up and ultimately falls ill. The story is very warm and sentimental and it will touch many ages from youngsters to the let's say "not so young" (I revisited our family's copy prior to doing this review).
Perhaps not as readily recognizable is "The Rabbit Dance" that is a highly diluted version of the gorgeous "Tamarack Pines" also appearing on the "Forest" CD.

BookkooB: The Velveteen Rabbit - Margery Williams
The rabbit, feeling a bit out of place and a bit unworthy, nonetheless yearned to be loved, not for what he could be or should have been, but rather for what he truly was.
Being real can hurt, but the rabbit in the process of becoming real barely notices that his velveteen fur is rubbing off, his tail is coming undone, his pink nose is worn and his whiskers are gone.
And the part where the Velveteen Rabbit and the Skin Horse have their conversation about what it is to be Real is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful pieces of writing in the English language.

My daughter introduced me to THE VELVETEEN RABBIT when she was five and we read it together until she knew it by heart.
I was reluctant at first to view the filmed version of the story; too many of my favorite books had been badly adapted to the screen, their plot telescoped to accommodate intrusive songs and music and irrelevant characters.
However, this animated version of THE VELVETEEN RABBIT has managed to keep the emotional content and magic of the original story.

 The Velveteen Rabbit
Nana was in a hurry, and it was too much trouble to hunt for china dogs at bedtime, so she simply looked about her, and seeing that the toy cupboard door stood open, she made a swoop.
And so time went on, and the little Rabbit was very happy–so happy that he never noticed how his beautiful velveteen fur was getting shabbier and shabbier, and his tail becoming unsewn, and all the pink rubbed off his nose where the Boy had kissed him.
And once, when the Boy was called away suddenly to go out to tea, the Rabbit was left out on the lawn until long after dusk, and Nana had to come and look for him with the candle because the Boy couldn't go to sleep unless he was there.

In a charming, unpretenious style reminiscent of Beatrix Potter, author Margery Williams delights new generations of youngsters with her poignant children's classic about a shabby toy bunny and the little boy who loves him.
The tale tells of the velveteen rabbit's happiness as he becomes the boy's favorite plaything, then strikes a sadder note as the worn-out toy is discarded after the boy's bout with scarlet fever.
Not for children alone, The Velveteen Rabbit will strike a fond chord of remembrance among adults recalling their own childhood toys and perhaps musing about the tale's deeper theme of the transforming power of love.

Margery Williams - The Velveteen Rabbit at Embracing the Child
Margery Williams Bianco (1881-1944) was born in London in 1881, and first came to the United States when she was nine years old.
Her first adult novel was published when she was 21, but the Velveteen Rabbit was the first, and best-known, of her thirty children's books.
To the child, this is about a friendship between a boy and his rabbit; to the grownups, it is a story that reminds us to accept ourselves as persons worthy of being loved and the real persons we become through loving relationships.
