One night in 1962, The Ventures came to the Palomino after doing a TV show in Hollywood, but they were without their drummer, so Mel obliged and played Walk Don't Run with the group.
Later, The Ventures asked him if he would be interested in working with the group, as their original drummer was unable to travel.
However, Mel and he kept in touch and, when The Ventures were re-activated in 1979 and passed through Austin on tour during 1981, Bob was delighted to be able to re-new his friendship with the guys.

The Ventures - Kings Of The Surf Instrumentals!
The Ventures are a surf instrumental rock band formed in 1958, by Don Wilson and Bob Bogle, two construction workers, who learned of a mutual interest in playing guitar, and started jamming together.
The Ventures were mainly active in the 1960s but they continue to perform and record right up to the present (2005).
The Ventures lineup underwent some key changes, which caused them to become a stronger performing unit, which undoubtedly enhanced their "staying power" from one year or less, (which was average for a charting rock band of the 1960's) to a career that has spanned 45 years and is still going strong in Japan.

Johnny and the Hurricanes, Duane Eddy, Link Wray and the Ventures became major headliners and there's little doubt that the Ventures had become the most recognized instrument group of the time.
Formed in 1959 in the Tacoma, Seattle area, the Ventures (originally the Impacts) were Don Wilson and Bob Bogle, guitars, Nokie Edward, bass, and Skip Moore, the first of three drummers the band used, including Howie Johnson, who was injured in a car accident and replaced by Mel Taylor.

SSRN-Online Music Joint Ventures: Taken for a Song by Harry First
The paper begins with a description of the business and legal environment in which the joint ventures were formed and traces developments in both since the ventures' formation.
The paper concludes that the formation of the ventures was anticompetitive, without regard to the ventures' licensing practices, and that the appropriate remedy would have been either to unwind the two ventures or divest the record companies' ownership of them.
Although the online music industry did not develop as might have been predicted when the ventures were formed, we owe these positive developments to the inability of the music industry to control the widespread infringement of their copyrights.
