The Verlaines - Biography - AOL Music
Drummer Alan Haig then replaced Kerr for the 1983 single "Death and the Maiden," for many fans the archetypal Verlaines song; the lineup finally cemented with the substitution of Haig for drummer Robbie Yeats, who first appeared on the 1984 EP 10 O'Clock in the Afternoon.
The Verlaines' full-length debut, 1985's Hallelujah All the Way Home, was originally submitted as part of a composition project for Downes' honors-level music class; he received an "A" grade for the record, which bore the heavy influence of his classical background in its exacting compositions, as well as its orchestral and brass fluorishes.
After the 1986 "Doomsday" single, the Verlaines resurfaced a year later with the excellent Bird-Dog LP; a long layoff followed as Downes pursued his Ph.D, and the group -- with new bassist Mike Stoodley -- did not again appear until the 1990 album Some Disenchanted Evening.

 || Flying Nun Records New Zealand - Verlaines ||
The Verlaines remain one of Dunedin's seminal bands from the city's first wave of young groups that rose to prominence along with their then Christchurch based record label, Flying Nun.
The Verlaines were formed by Graeme Downes, a young student studying classical music at Otago University who found inspiration to form a band from influences as diverse as the Ramones and Bob Dylan.
T he Verlaines' songs are studies in dramatic, dynamic rock -- whether they are guitar-based or embellished with all manner of classical instruments, the structure of Graeme's songs never fails to impress, and his superb lyrics thread poetic narratives regularly laced with fl humour and drunkenness.

Sneaky Feelings and the Flying Nun Sound
By the time I caught on to the music of New Zealand, bands like the Chills, the Bats and the Verlaines in the early '90's, much of their most exciting and groundbreaking work (for the most part) was behind them.
After contributing a shambling EP side to the famed Dunedin Double record which also featured a side each by the Chills, Verlaines and (in a fearless display of cheek) a short-lived band from Dunedin called the Stones, their proper debut, the excellent LP Send You was issued in 1984.
As the Verlaines' Graeme Downes remembers: "To like the Sneakys you had to appreciate the songs first and foremost, and had to be prepared to forego all the other aspects that are usually the hallmark of the successful rock and roll package."

The Verlaines were among the most conscious of the iconic ‘Dunedin Sound’ outfits.
The A-side enchanted ears with its brisk, jangly riffing and peppy singalong chorus "Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine," trammeled midway by a sturdy round of cheesy carnival oompah.

Dunedin is on the south east corner of the South Island of New Zealand, elbowing it’s way into the sea where the south west Pacific Ocean and the Southern Ocean meet.
It is known for producing alternative guitar bands and musicians, also being the home of The Clean, The Bats, The Chills, The Verlaines, Straitjacket Fits, Snapper, The Great Unwashed, The Renderers, The 3Ds, Sneaky Feelings, David Kilgour, Alistair Galbraith and many more.
The Dark Beaks grew from this tradition; their sound shaped by Dunedin’s DIY attitude, indifference to musical trends and the isolation of living on the edge of the world.

I love the fact that Death and the Maiden uses “Verlaine” as a refrain.
The Spinanes’ early song “Hawaiian Baby,” from their second single, modifies the refrain from “Death and the Maiden” in the lines “Graeme’s down at the bar, teaching hardships / Verlaines, Verlaines, Verlaines, Verlaines, Verlaines.” I believe Rebecca Gates is a noted Graeme Downes fan.

In the heyday of the early to mid-'80's, the Dunedin Sound bands hardly thrived on the support of local television and radio (who continue to prefer American soundalikes) while The Dead C have held even less allure as a valid proposition.
There was a whole generation of bands (that) had an attitude and sound in common, an attitude towards songwriting.
The Clean and The Stones bled off into a more improvised slightly messier thing but other bands like The Verlaines and The Chills were about finely crafted pop songs and jangly guitars.

Graeme Downes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The Verlaines emerged in the early '80s, part of the New Zealand guitar-pop belle époque which also produced such notables as The Clean, The Bats, and The Chills, and the noble Flying Nun label.
After the band's amicable split-up in 1997 following a half-dozen albums, singer/guitarist Graham Downes, the only member to stay with the band from start to finish, accepted a teaching position in Aukland, but brought his four-track with him and kept on recording.
Hammers and Anvils features much of the romantic, unpredictable charm that endeared The Verlaines to so many, but Downes has fully embraced singer-songwriterdom, his compositions still prismatic but more solitary than before, his astute lyrics as strange and wonderful as ever.

Known for his impressionistic work with the Verlaines, Downes has on his first solo album stripped his band's portentous musical intricacies to unearth a core of pent-up inspiration.
His spiralling cries can seem a bit strained on some tracks but, for the most part, they complement his signature layered guitar and odd chord changes.
Downes has sampled all parts here (except guitar and vocals), so the spontaneity of playing with a band, one of the Verlaines' strong points, is lost, but in some ways he manages to work this handicap in his favor, exerting the omniscient creative control of a gifted composer to full effect.

Your neighbor is in Arizona or Saskatchewan (you forget which) for an estate auction.
Still you float, half in and half out of the leaf strewn pool, half in and half out of sleep -- and you have all you need: a warm pool, the keys to your neighbor's house, and the Empress song, "Vodka and the Verlaines", playing in your head.
You don't know the song or the band, but somehow they are playing away somewhere behind your sun-stroked eyes, between your water logged ears.

Consistent almost to a fault, their catalog was generally very much of a piece, with minor variations here and there; this, combined with its size and scarcity, could make finding entry difficult, but experimental rock enthusiasts often found the rewards worth pursuing.
The Dead C was formed in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1987, with a lineup of guitarist/occasional vocalist Michael Morley (a onetime member of the evocatively named Wreck Small Speakers on Expensive Stereos), bassist and Xpressway label head Bruce Russell, and drummer Robbie Yeats (formerly of the well-liked Kiwi pop band the Verlaines).
In keeping with the early formats of Xpressway and Morley's own Precious Metal imprint, their earliest releases were only available on limited-run cassettes, but they also hooked up with Flying Nun in 1988 to issue their first LP, DR503 (which was retitled DR503b and DR503c for later reissues).
