  The Verve
The Verve, from Wigan in Lancashire, were formed in 1990.The band's line-up was originally Richard Ashcroft (vocals, guitar), Nick McCabe (guitar), Simon Jones (bass) and Peter Salisbury (drums).
For all Verve's charisma, however, they proved too elusive and, quite rightly, engrossed in their own ideals to be caught up in the music business fame machine.
These were to be the last releases from The Verve for almost two years as the band split after their performance at the T In The Park festival in Glasgow.

 The Verve
Verve was a British band who emerged in the early 90's with a totally unique, spacy sound, perhaps slightly resembling Syd Barret era Pink Floyd.
Verve (as they were then known) unleased their debut to an unsuspecting world in 1993, and, gasp, not that many people noticed, despite praise from critics and the support of a small, but unbelievably loyal group of fans, who, to this day, swear by this album and tell stories of how it changed their lives.
But this was a different Verve, and for proof, one just has to check the credits, with nine of the album's 13 tracks being written by Ashcroft, who leans much more to the catchy, poppy side of music more than the rest of the band.

Originally known simply as Verve, the group was formed in the small Northern English city of Wigan in 1989.
While Verve's long, liquid jams found favor on the British indie charts, pop radio looked the other way -- their majestic debut LP, 1993's A Storm in Heaven, was a critical smash, but the good reviews failed to translate into strong record sales.
The following summer, Verve appeared on the second stage at Lollapalooza, a tour tempered by a string of disasters -- not only was Salisbury arrested for destroying a Kansas hotel room, but Ashcroft was also hospitalized after suffering from severe dehydration.

Luckily however, the Verve also happen to be damn fine artists.
Each song on the album walks the line between bombast and simplicity; the band's rock star attitude pushing them towards sonic overload, their artistic sensibility reeling them back towards the heart of the song.
The willingness to take that risk is a key ingredient in the Verve's passion, but on Urban Hymns, the band has chosen a musical path that not only reaches its transcendent destination each time, but manages to leave memorable melodic signposts along the way.

The Verve was a modern British pop band with a tinge of psychedelia and more than a bit of melancholy.
They were, as their biggest commercial hit so aptly puts it, a "bittersweet symphony." Their music does emit a certain energetic quality supported by strong, echoing guitars.
The Verve finally found widespread recognition with 1997’s “Urban Hymns.” The catchy single “Bittersweet Symphony” (made from a loop of a symphonic Rolling Stone sample) established The Verve as a British pop mainstay.

The Verve have toned down their trancy, psychedelic excursions, yet haven't abandoned them -- if anything, they sound more muscular than before, whether it's the trippy "Catching the Butterfly" or the pounding "Come On." These powerful, guitar-drenched rockers provide the context for Ashcroft's affecting, string-laden ballads, which give Urban Hymns its hurt.
It is the album the Verve have been striving to make since their formation, and it turns out to be worth all the wait.
