Morrissey's lyrics, while superficially depressing, were often full of mordant humour (The Smiths were "one of the few bands capable of making me laugh out loud," said Peel) and his lovelorn tales of alienation found an audience amongst a disaffected section of youth culture, bored by the ubiquitous synthesizer bands that then dominated the charts.

Every Original CD Reviewed: The Smiths/Morrissey on Blender.com
Emerging from Manchester, England, at the helm of the Smiths, he brought sharp-tongued camp and morose self-pity to ’80s indie rock, influencing a rash of bleating emo-rockers — and Radiohead — while guitar sidekick Johnny Marr fused Brit-Invasion pop, rockabilly and glam in unlikely ways.
After the Smiths split in 1987, Morrissey found solo success despite his controversial soap-boxing (“I don’t think fl people and white people will ever get on”), avarice (former drummer Mike Joyce took him to court for back-pay) and weakness for sub-par collaborators.
Post-Smiths, Johnny Marr played guitar with The The and Bryan Ferry, but this remains his best non-Smiths work — a clean, futuristic dance-pop ideal forged with New Order’s Bernard Sumner.
