In three-volume English editions, the three volume editions are entitled "The Vicomte de Bragelonne","Louise de la Vallière" and "The Man in the Iron Mask." Each of these volumes is roughly the length of the original The Three Musketeers.
Raoul is the son of the Comte de la Fère, once known as Athos, one of the original musketeers.
De Bragelonne is based on the real Raoul de Braguelongue who was in love with Louise de la Vallière.

The hero is the young Raoul de Bragelone, son of the Comte de la Fère, formerly know as Athos.
As usual with Dumas, this new hero is based on a real character, Raoul de Braguelongue, who was in love with Louise de La Vallière, who in turn preferred King Louis XIV.

Basically, Dumas kept starting stories and then abruptly ending them which made the book a very confusing and tedious read to me. I kept reading this book and the next two hoping that the purpose of these stories would be explained to me but they never were.
I really enjoyed reading The Vicomte de Bragelonne because it fulfilled my expectations about the adventures of The Three Musketeers later on in their lives.
With it's outstanding plot, action and intrigue, The Vicomte de Bragelonne makes a great book to read if you want to find out more about The Three Musketeers and their further adventures.

The action takes place in 1660 and the story is taken forward by the next generation, principally by Athos' son, Raoul, the Vicomte de Bragelonne of the title.
