	Boston.com / News / Boston Globe / Obituaries / Robert Thomson; broadened appeal of 'Victory Garden'
		Thomson, 74, the retired host of WGBH's "The Victory Garden," and proprietor of the former Thomson's Nursery and Garden Center in Danvers, died Oct. 2 in Topsfield from the effects of Alzheimer's disease.
		Thomson also wrote a garden column for the Boston Herald, had a gardening radio spot on WEEI for 32 years, and wrote "The New Victory Garden." He and his wife, Helen "Betty" E. (Riley), ran the Danvers garden center that bore their name from 1954 until 1988.
		Thomson was already a well-known gardening radio personality when he succeeded the immensely popular James Underwood Crockett of Concord as host of "The Victory Garden" upon Crockett's death in 1979.

	UA Fort Smith
		Steve Dobbs, director of grounds and landscape program at UA Fort Smith, is coordinating the lecture series and said he is pleased that Wilson can be a part of it.
		Wilson gardened on a farm in upstate South Carolina until last year and has passed his 54th year in home and commercial horticulture since he graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in agriculture.
		The May program at UA Fort Smith is the fifth in the series.

		The Little Rhody Ranchers, a 4-H club based in Richmond and Hopkinton, scored a gardening victory as the winner of a national gardening contest for children sponsored by PBS television's Victory Garden program.
		The winning garden is a 90-by-40 foot plot of land off Mechanic St. in Richmond and adjacent to the Wood River on land owned by the Link family, the newest members of the Little Rhody Ranchers.
