Matthew White Ridley, 1st Viscount Ridley (July 25, 1842) - (November 28, 1904) was a British Conservative politician and statesman.
The eldest son of his namesake, 4th baronet, Ridley was born in London and educated at Harrow and Balliol College, Oxford.
He was that same year created Viscount Ridley and Baron Wensleydale, of Blagdon amd Blyth in the County of Northumberland.

William Court Gully, 1st Viscount Selby (August 29, 1835 - November 6, 1909), Speaker of the British House of Commons, was the son of Dr James Manby Gully of Malvern.

For veterans Harry Earp, Douglas Allan, and the Viscount Matthew Ridley, the onset of war in the Middle East has rekindled memories of their own exploits during World War II, when, as students of King's College (now the University), they were called upon to undertake firewatching duties during the Blitz.
Recently, Harry, Douglas and Lord Ridley met up for a 60th anniversary reunion with around 30 of their firewatching colleagues who were also students at King's College during 1942-43, to share fond memories of their student days.
As a dental student, retired Professor, Douglas Allan, was a firewatcher in the Old Medical School, and remembers watching air raids from the roof.
