Alternative-weekly newspaper chains Village Voice Media and New Times Media, accused of dividing markets when they sold competing papers to each other in Los Angeles and Cleveland, have tentatively settled allegations of antitrust violations and unfair competition with the Justice Department.
With the deal, New Times Media reportedly received $11 million from Village Voice for its Los Angeles newspaper, while Village Voice Media was paid $2 million for its Cleveland newspaper.
Village Voice Media, owner of LA Weekly, and New Times Media also would pay $610,000 in civil penalties and $140,000 in attorneys fees to the State of California.

Federal and state Justice Department officials are aggressively pursuing an antitrust investigation of New Times Corp., owner of the SF Weekly and the East Bay Express, and Village Voice Media and are looking into whether the two alternative newspaper chains are cutting back on news coverage.
Rachlis worked as executive editor of the Village Voice in the 1980s and, later, as editor in chief of the LA Weekly when it was still independent.
Indeed, the U.S. Justice Department has done nothing to derail the endless media mergers that have taken place between corporate giants in recent years, and has yet to block a single joint-operating agreement between competing newspapers since the Newspaper Preservation Act was passed in 1970.

NEW YORK -- The Village Voice, the 44-year-old alternative newspaper that became an icon of journalistic iconoclasm, has been sold to a group of investors who are installing the current publisher, David Schneiderman, as chief executive of a new company, Village Voice Media.
The investors, including the money management firm of Weiss, Peck & Greer and a private equity fund associated with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, paid between $150 million and $160 million for the Voice, The L.A. Weekly and five other newspapers, according to a source familiar with the finances of Stern Publishing.
Now the newspaper that was as anticorporate as any in the country has become the flagship of a corporation bearing its name: Village Voice Media.
