Watching Steven Spielberg's spooky and playfully spectacular remake of War of the Worlds, you may feel a surge of childlike awe, the same sort of awe inspired by the nuclear-nightmare fantasies of the '50s the moment when the giant tarantula, the Tokyo lizard king, the hell-bent flying saucer...the thing, whatever it was, stood revealed.

War of the Worlds, I decided to watch Byron Haskin's 1953 version for comparison.
Perhaps because The War of the Worlds comes just four years after the end of World War II, people might have been much more likely to take direction from a government that had issued numerous bomb alerts and still maintained active civil defense chapters.
By today's standards, The War of the Worlds has pretty unbelievable effects, but you can tell that Haskin took enormous care with the effects available to him at the time.

The 1950s movie is the only one really worth watching as it very closely follows the original H G Wells novel, with the exception that the action occurs in the 1950s US rather than in early 20th century London, England, and the alien technology is slightly altered from that in the book.

Clearly, the constant 9/11 invocation — which was test-driven in a speech by Bush muse Karl Rove a week earlier — is a desperate administration's attempt to rekindle America's latent fears of the crashing jetliners, burning skyscrapers, and collapsing buildings of our not-too-distant-past for renewed political exploitation.
