In 1772, after leasing the land from the Cherokees, the Wataugan settlers created the "Articles of the Watauga Association" and chose five men to govern for the common good of all the people.
The Wataugans were a tough and dedicated group of people, and without brave spirits like theirs' our country would never have gained independence.
I want to give them the credit they deserve for their enthusiasm in spreading the word about Fort Watauga and the courageous deeds of the men and women who lived there.

The Wataugans is the official outdoor historical drama of the state of Tennessee.
It is presented by the Watauga Historical Association and the Sycamore Shoals Historic Area in Elizabethton, Tennessee every July on the last three Thursday-Friday-Saturday weekends of the month (for the year 2004, the show dates were 15, 16, 17; 22, 23, 24; 29, 30, 31 July).
Employing a mixed cast of volunteering professional and amateur local actors and re-enactors engaged through an open casting call, The Wataugans depicts the early history of the area that is now Upper East Tennessee.

The Wataugan land became part of Tennessee in 1796.
During the American Revolution, fearing for the safety of family members residing in "Old 96" District of South Carolina (in Cherokee lands), the Wataugans joined other Tennesseans and mustered at Sycamore Shoals for a fast trek through the Appalachian Mountains to King's Mountain where they fought valiantly against the British.

Inhabited mostly by Iroquois, Wataugans, Shawnee, Chickasaw and Cherokee, the history of modern Tennessee began in 1504, when Hernando de Soto led the first white expedition into the region.
The area was later part of a grant made to Sir Walter Raleigh, but it the Iroquois did not give the land to the English until 1768.
In 1772, the inhabitants of the first two settlements met to form the Wataugan Association, establishing the first constitution in the New World east of the Appalachian Mountains.

The John and Landon Carter Mansion is possibly the only remaining link to the Watauga Association, and one of the oldest houses remaining in Tennessee.
In 1772, the Wataugans elected John Carter chairman of the court, under the terms of the "Articles," and the independent community functioned for six years in defiance of the British and colonial governments and the Cherokee Indians.
John Carter and his son, Landon, were prominent in governmental as well as military affairs, having taken part in the Revolutionary War and in various conflicts with the Indians.

In 1772, frontiersmen in the area joined in a loose federation, the Watauga Association, an early form of local self-government formed primarily for the purpose of marshalling a concerted effort against the Indians.
When the War for Independence erupted in 1775, the Wataugans performed admirably against the British and their native allies in the area and made a major contribution in the fighting at King's Mountain.
Following the war, a number of Wataugans played prominent roles in the short-lived State of Franklin.

The three -- Mary Jane Kennedy, Veronica DeBusk and Wenny Elrod -- came together during last year's anniversary performances of "The Wataugans." While Mary Jane and Wenny were newcomers to the drama, DeBusk has been a part of the drama for 10 years.
Both, she and Mary Jane are members of the Elizabethton Choral Club, and all three are members of the Watauga Historical Society, which serves as "Friends of Sycamore Shoals Park."
Ruetz' son's, Jon, invited Wenny and Chuck to participate in "The Wataugans." Like Mary Jane, last year was their first in "The Wataugans." Now, both Wenny and Chuck are part of the Overmountain Singers.

Lord Cornwallis had dispatched Major Patrick Ferguson to put a stop to guerilla forays, some of which were conducted by patriots from the Watauga Settlements on Upper East Tennessee.

In 1788, the State of Franklin collapsed and by 1796 it became part of Tennessee when the former Governor of Franklin, John Sevier, became the first Governor of Tennessee.
Frustrated by the uncertainties and feeling abandoned by North Carolina, the former Regulator Wataugans formed the State of Franklin in 1784.
Thus began a 4-year attempt at self-government for a group that would experience conflict with North Carolina, Cherokees, Continental Congress, and ultimately among themselves as two of their leaders, Tipton and Sevier, faced each other in armed conflict.

The first 88 Wataugans to be called into action were ready six months later, on June 30, 1941.
But this advancement was not to be denied; the Forties saw the advent of electric power county-wide, and by 1949 BREMCO could count 10,000 customers.
In the last decade before industry (the first committee to attract industry was formed in the county in 1949, but the first success - IRC - wasn't attracted until 1952 - farming continued to form the livelihood of many Wataugans.
