Thus, with some trepidation I attended the screening for his latest film, "The Waterboy." While the previews are admittedly funny, it doesn't take a brain surgeon to see that Sandler and company have squarely aimed the picture back at his former target audience.
While some films are so stupid they're unintentionally funny, and others are so moronic that they're not, "The Waterboy" manages to elicit a fair number of laughs despite its predictable plot, mediocre characters and mostly unimaginative writing.

The Audio Revolution Review of 'The Waterboy'
Adam Sandler's latest vehicle "The Waterboy" falls somewhere between the date-movie amiability of "The Wedding Singer" and the aggressive sports comedy of "Happy Gilmore." The tone is silly but not stupid, physically bruising yet not mean-spirited.
Technical credits on "The Waterboy" are decent, with a few impressive, if not especially crucial, special effects flourishes, such as when a football playbook remains bright green while the flashback around it is rendered in fl-and-white.
Aurally, "Waterboy's" best asset is its score, comprised of a greatest-hits album worth of songs about Louisiana and the South in general - "Born on the Bayou," "House of the Rising Sun," etc. - which are now and then allowed to flourish without interruption from the dialogue/sound effects track.

I had high hopes for "The Waterboy" since Sandler is again teamed with director Frank Coraci, who helped the comedian out of the dork comedy cellar in "The Wedding Singer." But this thing has less plot than a porno movie.

 TheMovieBoy Review: The Waterboy (1998)
Going into Sandler's latest picture, "The Waterboy," I was optimistic since it was written by Tim Herlihy and directed by Frank Coraci, the same people who worked on "The Wedding Singer." The fact that that film was good only makes "The Waterboy," an even more diappointing follow-up.
Sandler plays Bobby Boucher, a constantly made fun of 31-year-old waterboy for a small-town Louisiana football team, who, in the opening scene, is fired by the hateful coach (Jerry Reed).
The material in "The Waterboy" is so cliched and recycled that I wonder why Sandler, Coraci, and Herlihy decided to make this after the huge success of, "The Wedding Singer." They should have known this was a big step down for all involved.
