The Weather Channel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
TWC originally gathered its national region forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and gathered its local forecasts from local National Weather Service offices, but since 2002 has done local forecasting in-house from Marietta, Georgia.
The Weather Channel produces a service, based on modified versions of WeatherStar technology, called Weatherscan on which a separate channel constantly displays local and regional conditions and forecasts along with The Weather Channel's logo and advertisements.
A UK version of The Weather Channel ran from 1 September 1996 to 30 January 1998, when it was closed due to low viewing figures.

The Weather Channel is MTV for the elderly.
To be fair, however, none of the weather forecasts (including the Weather Channel) for that part of Colorado considered the effects of mountainous terrain into their predictions--those showers and storms seemed to be unpredictable.
Instead the Weather Channel features forecasters who warn you not to travel because of the possibility of big storms which sometimes don't materialize -cancel your parties, make sure grandma is safe, bring the dog in, head for the basement but whatever you do, keep watching.

As documented by Batten, the Weather Channel reached its low point in mid-1983 when, racked by losses, Landmark came within days of shutting down the operation, only to be saved by the cable system operators who agreed to pay subscriber fees to keep the service running.
Given some breathing room, the Weather Channel steadily improved its programming and technology and, as Batten acknowledges, rode the wave of the explosive growth of cable television to the point where in 2000 the Weather Channel generated revenues of $320 million and attracted millions of loyal viewers.
Those of us who have been TWC fans for many years would have appreciated seeing some of the old faces, old graphics, and old technology that have made The Weather Channel the familiar and trusted friend it is today for millions of people.
