It's not enough to just stock a wedding movie with zany relatives and physical antics; there has to be some cleverness behind it.
The movie has other unsavory moments, such as when Nick casually undresses in front of Kat, as if he's offering her a glimpse of heaven, and when the female wedding guests literally drool over Nick's rear end, as if he were a rump roast hanging in a butcher shop.
Kat Ellis (Debra Messing, left) hires Nick Mercer (Dermot Mulroney), a charming and handsome professional male escort, to be her date at her sister's wedding in the romantic comedy The Wedding Date.

Wedding Bells - Invitation Samples - When wedding date is changed
On the rare occasion when the wedding date has to be changed after the invitations have been printed, there is no need to go to the expense of ordering new invitations.
One solution is to enclose a small printed card indicating: "The date of the wedding has been changed from [date] to [date]." If there is a small number of guests, the same information may be handwritten on a small card.
If, however, the invitations need to be sent before the cards can be printed, there is the option of neatly crossing out the old date and writing in the new one by hand.

Save the Date Cards - Wedding Etiquette
Since Save the Date cards are used as a preliminary invitation to your wedding, they should be sent at least 4 months before the wedding, which is about 2 months before your wedding invitations will be in the mail.
Save the Dates are not necessary, but are especially important if many of your friends and family will have to travel to your wedding location or if your wedding date falls on or around any holidays.
Save the Dates allow your guests to have plenty of time to request work off, arrange hotel and/or airfare, arrange for babysitters etc. so that your wedding will be a celebrated event and possible vacation that they will share with you.

Messing plays Kat Ellis, a New York City career woman who is preparing to attend the wedding of her half-sister in England.
There's just one little problem -- she doesn't have a date for the wedding, and the best man at the upcoming event is the same guy who recently dumped her after seven years together.
And "Wedding Date" director Clare Kilner makes the most of the beautiful locations in the Surrey countryside of England.

Said guy is the Best Man and everyone involved in the wedding, from Mom on down to the Flower Girl, to this day still thinks the end of that affair was all your doing.
While it is definitely a movie that proves without a doubt the star quality of Will and Grace stalwart Messing, the flick itself is decidedly uninspiring, traveling down a familiar road with few bumps or detours along the way to enliven the trip.
Flirty and funny, silly and seductive, she’s definitely a movie star and capable of carrying things on her sublimely svelte shoulders with sunny invigorating grace.

The Wedding Date's Pretty Woman-in-reverse plot finds Kat Kat Ellis (Messing) hiring expensive male escort Nick Mercer (Mulroney) to fly to London and pose as her dashing new boyfriend at her sister's wedding so she can face the best man, an ex-fiancé who broke her heart.
Mulroney has nothing to do but be sensitively suave--the film's entire running time is spent waiting for Kat to realize that Nick, hooker or no, is the best thing that ever happened to her (her father may be cinema's first dad to ever encourage his daughter to snare a gigolo while she still can).
The Wedding Date is a romantic comedy, and to do that formula well you either have to do the formula perfectly with perfectly cast leads or you have to come up with a unique angle.

The Wedding Date (2005): Debra Messing, Dermot Mulroney, Amy Adams, Jack Davenport - PopMatters Film Review
Kat appears to be some kind of airline customer service whiz (as her cohorts feel panicky when she leaves for a few days), which suggests she'll have something in common with her date.
When Amy announces that Nick is "hunky dunky," Kat is visibly anxious; when Jeffrey is on the opposing side in cricket, Kat wants to throw the match, but Nick wins it soundly, achieving the end she wants, Jeffrey's ostensible interest.
For all The Wedding Date's predictable schmaltziness and Messing's variable charms (while Grace has gone through some changes, this character is quite stuck in one-note range), it still manages to be less bearable than most of its generic fellows.

TheMovieBoy Review - The Wedding Date (2005)
Directed by Clare Kilner (2003's "How to Deal"), "The Wedding Date" is unctuous from the very start—it begins with the flash-in-the-pan hit, "Breathless," a played-out song released by The Corrs almost five years ago—and, if not an outright chore to sit through, thoroughly pillowy and instantly forgettable.
However, as the days go by and Kat endures the parties, get-togethers, and bachelorette celebration that go along with all weddings, she forgets all about Jeffrey and starts to grow feelings for the kind-hearted, sexy Nick.
"The Wedding Date," an unoriginal title that accurately matches the film's own level of innovation, is a piffle of a romantic comedy that embraces genre conventions while sidestepping some potentially interesting issues.

Okay "The Wedding Date" is not an episode of "Will and Grace" but it sure seems like one.

With Dermot Mulroney playing some kind of android gigolo and Debra Messing bronzed in her syndicated brand of humiliated never-a-bride shtick honed through years on "Must-See TV," The Wedding Date doesn't, at least, always accidentally resemble a horror flick, unlike director Clare Kilner's previous film, the creepy How to Deal.
