A century ago, Cape Codders hunted whales (August 1, 2002)
In fact, the local economy was driven by whale hunting for many years before the use of their oil was replaced by other materials.
Popular right whales were hunted in the early 1700s along the coast, towed to shore, and processed into oil and meat on the beaches.
Whaling was at its peak in New England from 1800 to 1860, and whaling profits made these seaports some of the wealthiest in America.

In August, whales were seen just south of St Lawrence Island and in offshore waters between the Bering Strait and St Lawrence Island, with a single sighting of three animals north of Bering Strait in the southern Chukchi Sea.
The majority of whales seen were feeding (57%, n = 276), as evidenced by mud streaming from the whale's mouth or by the presence of conspicuous mud plumes, which are large billows of sediment brought to the surface by bottom feeding whales.

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society - Whales Around the World - Iceland
Whaling came to an end in 1986 after a Sea Shepherd crew scuttled half the whaling fleet and destroyed the whale meat processing plant.
The Institute says that the distribution of whales close to Iceland seems to be quite different from the distribution of whales during the 1986-2000 period.
As you may know whales constitute a large component of the marine ecosystem in Icelandic waters and from a scientific point of view it is highly undesirable to leave them out of research programs on ecological interaction in the marine environment.

 Scientists probe death of whales
Those whales had turned up dead in the previous six weeks in the same area; most were found within 80 kilometres of each other and had been dead between one week and one month.
Tissue samples from six whales have been sent to a lab in South Carolina to determine the cause of death.
Primarily inshore animals, the whales prefer these relatively shallow waters, especially when feeding their young, but they are constantly at risk of being hit by ships or getting entangled in fishing gear.
