The Whispering Vault - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Whispering Vault is a role-playing game, originally published in 1993.
Characters within the Whispering Vault used to be human, but after a life dedicated to protect humanity against supernatural beings they've been recruited into the ranks of the Stalkers, the main heroes of the game.
Now armed with supernatural disciplines and able to summon ghostly servitors, their mission is to hunt down the Unbidden, rebellious gods who escaped into their dream, the Realm of Flesh, or what humanity calls "Reality".

The Whispering is something more though, it's the first PDF that I've read that's compelled me to rush out and buy the original.
It would be entirely wrong to describe Whispering Vault only as a RPG where angelic-demonic-creatures do battle with demonic-shadow-creatures.
As much as I love the Whispering Vault I feel I need to offer up a caveat; if you're used to bashing orcs in a four-colour fantasy campaign then the Whispering Vault may well be too far off the beaten track for you.

The tables closest to the whispering were occupied by only a few other students, none of whom were making the noise.
The whispering was coming from the shelf - there was a solid wall of concrete behind it.
As he reached for the book he thought was closest to the source of the noise, intending to check behind it, the sound of the whispering came into sharp focus.

I thought at first that it was the wind, or maybe my imagination, but as the whispers got louder I knew I was not alone...
I knew I was hot on their trail though as I crepted up to this thick clump of willows, the whispers were coming louder now and steady even thought I still couldn't make out what they were a'sayin.
Those whispers I'd chased were coming from that book; there was a silver light, like the moon was caught in there, too.

 Whispering Vault? - RPGnet Forums
The "Return to the Vault 2001!" banner ad was here even into last week, before an obviously (and understandably) disappointed Kevin Mowery picked at it.
I'd guess that the writers or some other key personel bailed out, or the company ran out of money, or some damn thing, but it's not like I really know...someone who was actually involved should probably be answering this.
About the Whipering Vault re-release: I suppose the chances that this will happen are slim, the homepage of the company wasn't updated since the year 2000 and an e-mail I wrote to them concerning the release of WV received no answer.

Whispering Vault Question - RPGnet Forums
I've read so much material on the Vault, from printed books to PDFs to the stacks upon stacks of notes and manuscripts for future Vault supplements, that everything has blurred together and I no longer know what is where.
An example is this fairly dense manuscript that covers tethers, The Grey Isles, The Iron Maze, The Howling Hives, and numerous other locations in the Realm of Essence.
A description of the Navigators and Guardians with one possibility being the appearance of a B-52 bomber with skeletal crew also comes to mind.

 Rough categories of Narrativist play/design
Prince Valiant, The Whispering Vault, Zero, Sorcerer, Dust Devils, Trollbabe, Hero Quest, Orkworld - very strong reward mechanics design, resolution relies highly on Fortune in the Middle, relationships and motivations are forefront regardless of setting vs. character emphasis; TROS is a "stealth" version of this category.
Category #1: Castle Falkenstein derives its conflicts primarily from Setting, Soap from character, and both Universalis and The Window are pretty laissez-faire about where conflict comes from (in terms of the five elements).
Category #2: Hero Quest derives its conflicts primarily from Setting, Prince Valiant from Situation, and The Whispering Vault, Sorcerer, and Dust Devils from Character.

In the end I was so taken with this terrifying visage that I found myself almost unwillingly using parts of it in other images and even today whenever I try creating a robot I invariably start with a pill shaped head.
