 No holds bard - smh.com.au
Freedman, on piano and vocals, formed the Whitlams with guitarist/singer Stevie Plunder in 1992.
The trio's first two albums each sold a few thousand copies, their gigs in mid-size pubs pulled in reasonable numbers and songs such as Gough (1993) and I Make Hamburgers (1996) had the right mix of levity and low-key pop to garner Triple J airplay.
Those sales figures (and lack of radio play) were repeated for the last album, Love This City and the connections made with a vast audience by constant touring were reaping their own rewards.
