Upto11.net - Artist Profile for The Who
By the end of the seventies The Who had completely given up the power trio format and began touring with a keyboardist, backup singers, and a small horn section, none of which were officially members of the band.
The musicians of the Who were also natural showmen: singer Daltrey was a dynamic front man, twirling his microphone on the end of its cord, while Townshend played crashing chords on his guitar with great windmill-like sweeps of his arms and the maniacal Moon battered his drums powerfully.
Who's Next was followed by a second Rock opera called Quadrophenia (1973), with a story line based on the clashes between Mods and Rockers in the early 1960s, particularly the riots between the two factions at Brighton.

The Who were natural showmen: Singer Roger Daltrey was a dynamic front man, twirling his microphone on the end of its cord while Townshend played chords on his guitar with great windmill -like sweeps of his arms, and the maniacal Moon bashed and crashed like no drummer ever before him.
The Who's first hit single was the Kinks-like "I Can't Explain" in 1965, but they vaulted to fame with their album, My Generation.
Who's Next was followed by the Who's final rock opera, Quadrophenia (which was based on the story of the Mods and Rockers, particularly riots between the two factions at Brighton).Other later albums were more personal, and Townshend eventually transferred this personal style to his solo albums.

With the rock opera Tommy, Townshend contributed one for the ages; concept albums from 200 Motels to The Wall owe it a debt.
For a period, The Who became a mouthpiece for Townshend's musical pipe dreams, from the failed Lifehouse concept (salvaged for the classic Who's Next) to Quadrophenia.
Subsequent albums eschewed stories for songs; among these, Who Are You comes closest to approaching their best work.

The Who are found in a frantic daze of disillusionment, unleashing track after track of enthralling energy.
Who Are You (1978) had a more upbeat tone and heavy, multi-layered production by producers Glyn Johns and Ted Astley.
While WHO fans don't have high regards for this album, it is full of beautiful melodies that are fun to sing along, almost a trend setter for the 80s pop music.

Keith Moons drumming flows with the music much different than those of groove style drummers, Entwistle's bass playing is electric and melodic and rhythmic and breathtaking all at the same time, Townshend's power chords and fitting stylized solos and unpretentious song writing (at this time of his career) was at its best.

Featuring the hoarse vocals of Mick Jagger-lookalike Phil May and the stinging leads of guitarist Dick Taylor (who actually played in early versions of the Rolling Stones with Jagger and Keith Richards), the Pretties recorded a clutch of raunchy RandB rockers in the mid-'60s that offer a punkier, rawer version of the early Stones sound.
Remembered chiefly as proto-punkers who reached the top of the charts with the "caveman rock" of "Wild Thing" (1966), the Troggs were also adept at crafting power pop and ballads.
Hearkening back to a somewhat simpler, more basic British Invasion approach as psychedelia began to explode in the late '60s, the group also reached the Top Five with their flower-power ballad "Love Is All Around" in 1968.
