Unlike many sequels, which secure their existence and sometimes go into preproduction before the first movie even hits theaters, The Whole Ten Yards was not a pre-ordained outcome when the first film came out in 2000.
The Whole Nine Yards was a modest surprise, a quirky mixture of genres and characters that did better than anybody expected it to.
The basic premise was this - take all of the small things in the first film that made it funny and memorable, and exaggerate and repeat them so often in the hopes that this will make the sequel funnier and more memorable.

Willis Goes the Whole ten Yards
It was clear from the outset that in promoting his latest film, The Whole Ten Yards, that superstar Bruce Willis was going to try and avoid discussing anything unrelated to his career - or that movie.
The superstar says that it was his Ten Yards co-star Matthew Perry who encouraged the two actors to try and switch roles in a way, with Willis now playing, at least initially, a kinder, gentler contract killer.
Willis, who is not a fan of the press and rarely sits down with the print media at a press junket, actually got the idea for the Whole Ten Yards at, of all things, the press junket for the original comedy when all the actors re-grouped to promote Whole Nine Yards.

TheMovieBoy Review - Whole Ten Yards, The (2004)
It is gravely doubtful that there is a single person on the planet who wished for a sequel to 2000's marginal mob comedy sleeper "The Whole Nine Yards." Nevertheless, here it is, a long four years later and its only reason for being to cash some paychecks.
"The Whole Ten Yards" isn't so much a harmless time-waster as it is a vicious time-stealer, a worthless disgrace of a sequel whose plot forgoes narrative cohesion in exchange for a flimsy excuse simply to reunite the same cast of imbecilic characters.
And, if at all possible, the one-dimensional characters have regressed into even bigger caricatures than they were in "The Whole Nine Yards." The general equivalent of 2003's worst picture, "The In-Laws," "The Whole Ten Yards" deserves nothing more than to be buried deep within the rubble of trash it eeked out of.

calendarlive.com: MOVIE REVIEW - 'The Whole Ten Yards'
Four years ago, "The Whole Nine Yards" registered as a modest hit for Warner Bros., prying $57 million from the cold, dead hands of February — a more impressive feat before "Hannibal" and "The Passion of the Christ" turned the month into an address for blockbusters.
In "Ten Yards," the two couples have married (having faked Jimmy's death), with the Oseranskys living comfortably in Brentwood and the Tudeskis in seclusion in Mexico.
In "Ten Yards," Perry's character falls down a lot and is merely along for the ride, a dupe so far behind the audience that he needs the plot explained to him at the end of the movie.

Oz (Matthew Perry) is now married to Cynthia (Natasha Henstridge) who use to be the wife of Jimmy "The Tulip" Tudeski (Bruce Willis), ex-hit man for the mob.
Bringing this sequel to the screen without having anything further to say about these characters or their relationships was a foolish idea and it shows on the screen.

The Whole Nine Yards is a totally underated film, unfortunately the sequel, despite retaining all the original stars, is a ridiculous mess and should never have been made.
Everyone overacts and it is only its lack of morality and very strange sense of humour that saves it from being a TOTAL turkey (Bruce Willis telling Amanda Peet that he's gonna stab her in the face is a line I never thought I'd hear in a comedy).

So four years later, with the ongoing success of the first one, they open out with a sequel called "The Whole Ten Yards." This movie is not as bad as everyone is saying it is. It isn't a great movie and is very forgettable, but it still is enjoyable.
There are a lot of funny scenes in the film but what I'm getting in this movie is that it is more of a comedy while The Whole Nine Yards was more on a serious note even though it had a lot of funny parts.

To say that the plot – and, by extension, the script – is convoluted would be putting it mildly.
Perry bumps into every inanimate object within ten yards (ah, maybe that’s where the title comes from) – sometimes three and four times in a row.
The only good thing about “The Whole Ten Yards” is that we don’t have to listen to Rosanna Arquette’s whiny French accent (she played Oz’s cheating wife in the original).

Anyone who's seen 'The Whole Nine Yards' will no doubt remember that originality wasn't one of its strong points.
What saved it, though, was a good cast, combining Matthew Perry's natural knack for slapstick with Bruce Willis' oft-concealed aptitude for playing his roles with tongue-in-cheek.
