deseretnews.com - Movie review: The Wild Bunch | Deseret Morning News Web edition
That isn't to say "The Wild Bunch" is not bloody or violent — of course it is. But the bloodletting does not seem gratuitous.
In "The Wild Bunch," death is horrifying, chilling and deeply felt, especially when innocent bystanders die by the truckload just because they happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
And later, when the Bunch decides that its way of life just doesn't fit into the New West of 1913, and they plan one final heist on which to retire, it is ironic that their loyalty to each other — honor among thieves, if you will — provides both their redemption and their demise.

Wild Bunch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Wild Bunch, also known as the Doolin–Dalton Gang, was a group of outlaws based in Indian Territory, that terrorized Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma Territory during the 1890s—robbing banks and stores, holding up trains, and killing lawmen.
A later gang also called the "Wild Bunch", was an outlaw gang in the American Wild West; it was led by Butch Cassidy, and it included the Sundance Kid, Tall Texan, News Carver, Camila Hanks, Laura Bullion, Elza Lay, Flat-Nose Curry, Kid Curry and Bob Meeks.
In 1908, Cassidy and Sundance may have been killed in a shootout with Bolivian cavalry; but there is evidence they both returned to the United States, with the Sundance Kid dying in 1936.

Pike Bishop (Holden), the aging leader of the outlaws, regains a certain degree of self-respect by uttering this line, precisely because he is, to a great and ironic extent, responsible for making it necessary to fight the general.
The end of the Bunch's way of life is only a matter of time; Bishop's comments about not having it any other way is saturated with irony, given the tragic yet salient fact that he and the Bunch have very few options left.
The impression is that Sykes and Thornton are the unlucky ones precisely because they have survived; instead of dying nobly for a cause, they will rot in ever-increasing ignominy in a world which never wanted them and can finally eliminate them by eliminating their livelihood.

Firstly, in the opening shootout, the bunch places innocent pedestrians at the whim of their active weapons, much like the children with little care for the scorpions they have endangered.
Westerns are attitudes, threats, and rewards — The Wild Bunch does not highlight these genre traits, and replaces them with a violence unparalleled in the genre’s other entries; it is Sam Peckinpah’s trademark punch, and The Wild Bunch is his showcase.
The distinguishing reason for the battle is camaraderie, yet there is also the implication that the bunch has nothing left to do, fearing a lack of action, violence, and purpose imminent in their uncertain futures.

`Wild Bunch' Rides Again / Director's cut of '69 classic
The director's cut of ``The Wild Bunch'' -- about 10 minutes longer than most audiences have seen -- arrives today in 70mm at the Castro Theater in San Francisco, only one of three new, color-corrected 70mm prints -- the others are showing in Los Angeles and New York -- put out for rerelease.
The dust, the parched landscape, the brilliant train robbery, the children torturing scorpions (which sets the tone for the film), the whiskey-fueled laughter of the Bunch, and those long, agonizing, wearying, time-twisted scenes of violence in 70mm force you to experience the movie as it was by many in 1969.
Maybe ``The Wild Bunch'' is more in touch with what the world's coming to than we like to think.
