  The Wire - Television Review
THE WIRE is an award-winning drama that powerfully addresses many of the complex issues plaguing America's inner cities.
Set in Baltimore, Maryland, The Wire centers on the police department's ability to secretly gain access to criminal organizations through the use of electronics and wiretap surveillance.
While The Wire takes a much-needed critical look at the social problems and institutional ineffectiveness of urban America, it fails to offer gratifying solutions to those problems.

 The Wire (2002 - ???) - A Hollywood Jesus Television Show Review
Season three of THE WIRE examined the concept and nature of reform and the role of the political leadership in addressing a city's problems.
Earlier themes included the death of the American working class, depicted in season two, and the inherent conflict between individuals and the modern institutions to which they are beholden, as seen in the protracted drug investigation that began in season one and continues into the third season.
THE WIRE was created by David Simon; executive producers are David Simon and Nina Kostroff Noble, with co-executive producer, Joe Chappelle.

The Seattle Times: Television: "The Wire": The best TV show no one's watching
Tense and gritty as the ghetto it portrays, "The Wire" is the red-headed stepchild of HBO.
If someone liked a television show back in the day, they'd say, a little embarrassed, "It's as good as a movie!" These days, you'd be hard-pressed to find anything at the multiplex as thoughtful as what's on HBO.
In the case of "The Wire," the best analogy might be the serialized 19th-century novel, the kind of thing that kept Dickens fans lined up at newsstands in anticipation of the next installment.

The Washington Wire, which is among the most venerated products of the Journal's Washington bureau, also is one of the oldest standing features in American journalism.
Since the Wire was launched on Sept. 20, 1940, the Journal has offered readers an informal look at the capital's comings and goings in a series of newsy, and sometimes even gossipy, items.
Now online each weekday, the Wire provides a succession of glimpses at what's happening behind hot stories and early warnings of what to watch for in the days ahead.

Everything you were afraid to ask about "The Wire" - Salon
"The Wire" wears the trappings of a simple police show, but, as Simon notes in his commentary on the Season 1 DVD, the show is "really about the American city, and about how we live together.
Absolutely, and this is where Simon's declaration in his introduction to the book "The Wire: Truth Be Told" -- that character and plot in "The Wire" come second to "picking a fight" -- seems a little suspect.
"The Wire" is not compulsively watchable because of its powerful arguments about the war on drugs and the failure of the American dream.

The Wire (TV series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Wire is an American television drama set and produced in Baltimore, Maryland.
In distinguishing the police characters from other television detectives, Simon makes the point that even the best police of The Wire are motivated not by a desire to protect and serve, but by the intellectual vanity of believing they are smarter than the criminal they are chasing.
Central to the structure and plot of the show is the use of electronic surveillance and wiretap technologies by the police—hence the title "The Wire." Salon.com described the title as a metaphor for the viewer's experience—the wiretaps provide the police access to a secret world, just as the show does for the viewer.

It is television that demands work, but the payoff is worth it.

As a dark vision of inner city turmoil, The Wire is the most densely written and demanding show on the air.

'The Wire' and 'Arrested Development' -- too smart to make it?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Not to throw a gigantic wet blanket on the state of television, but there's a decent chance that neither the best drama nor the best comedy on television will be back next year.
HBO's "The Wire" and Fox's "Arrested Development" couldn't be any different from each other, but they share one similar trait: relatively speaking, nobody's watching either of them.
If "The Wire" and "Arrested Development" don't come back next year, the optimist inside says there will be other exceptional series that will rise to take their places.

Fine, don't watch 'The Wire.' But that would be a big mistake.
There are big stories in "The Wire," and they are told complexly, but thoroughly, with the understanding that you are a thinking person who will stand in there and absorb the dialogue, the motivation, the deeper meanings.
Whether holding steadfast to that artistic vision will get "The Wire" a fourth season is a matter of profound speculation, but look no further than putting it on against the Emmys for your first bad sign.
This is a guy who took the artistic achievement that was the first season and turned it on its head in the second season by reducing the street cops versus street criminals element of the war on drugs to "B" story status.
