Wizards is an animated post-apocalyptic Science Fiction/Fantasy epic movie written, produced and directed by Ralph Bakshi in 1977, and released by 20th Century Fox.
The film, originally titled War Wizards (later shortened to Wizards to avoid confusion with Star Wars, which was being made at the same time for Fox), was originally to be entirely cel-animated from scratch, but because of budget problems, Bakshi was unable to complete the battle sequences with the budget Fox had given him.
Wizards is an allegorical comment on the neutrality of technology and the potential destructive powers of propaganda.

One of the benefits of the rotoscoping process is it presents animation at 22 frames per second, or, live action film quality, one of the drawbacks to rotoscoping is it looks like crap.
Wizards comes relatively early in his career and plays sort of like a warmup to his most expansive work, an adaptation of Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings (1978).
Wizards is a fantasy story pitting the world of mutants who use technology against the world of elves and fairies who use magic in a post apocalyptic Earth.

When the films were projected on the battlefield, the mutant army was inspired and were no match for the elves that were frightened and confused by the images.

Film genres can be both very rigid and somewhat fluid; genre films can become so numerous that their elements can seem formulaic, yet it’s easy for films to have characteristics of multiple genres.
Film is primarily a visual medium while tabletop based pen-and-paper RPGs are, by and large, a spoken medium (that is, the ideas and images are usually conveyed from DM to player via verbal description).

His next film would be his greatest break at mainstream acceptance, his ambitious adaptation of The Lord of the Rings (1978), but this met with very mixed audience reception and Bakshi never completed the second half of the adaptation.
In the film Bakshi was clearly drawing on the influence of both sword and sorcery artists like Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo and the whole fantasy comics scene of the 1970s.
And there are those images that have a touching simplicity - of fairies in flight, the picture of a valley that passes from morning to night in a matter of seconds, and the almost heartbreaking image of a dancing fairy forced to bare one of her straps before boorish soldiers.

I don’t know any other business where, in the case of a feature film, 60 to 100 disparate people get together for eight or nine weeks, 20 hours a day, six or seven days a week and then and four to six months later the film opens.
And, relating this all back to Wizards and Warriors, it was particularly challenging task for a production designer because what we were shooting, really, every week was a sword and sorcery feature film.

This is not to say that it isn't a sleazy Tolkien-meets-Heavy-Metal fantasy riff, but it's one with moments that resonate beyond simplistic sex and violence and wipe the goofy grin off of the normally flighty and gossamer-draped genre.
In the end, Wizards is a cold slap in the face to those who dream of leading the charge against orcs and empires, offering an attempt to smash the war machine itself instead of stealing it for one's own power.
Almost as good is Bakshi's feature-length yakker, wherein he generously points out the contributions of the various members of his staff and elucidates the (somewhat thin) thematic motives behind some of his artistic choices--this goes well beyond the "it was cold that day" school of commentary.

But the film shows all the signs of an economic freeze: it has quite lavish backgrounds, but bare, unimaginative character movement, and frequent use of still drawings to fill in portions of the narrative.

The film was rated PG at the time of it's release, so I would be wary of showing it to younger viewers, but I think it's a really wonderful alternative full of heart to the shiny, happy, uber-clean, product tie-in animation put out by the larger profit-driven studios.

Weekend: Even wizards suffer teen angst
Any apprehensions about Mike Newell's film are erased in the final act, a wonderfully tense action sequence with Ralph Fiennes' serpent interpretation of Voldemort living up to prolonged expectations.

The inevitability of Voldemort's return in future films is a solid reason for the series to continue.
