The Wizard of Oz (1939 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The re-release of the movie to theaters for a time in the late 1990s settled this issue, as the picture was large enough to reveal the truth that the small TV screen had made to seem ambiguous.
Wizard of Oz collectibles, such as autographs and props from the film, are among the most sought-after of all movie memorabilia.
The Wizard who encourages and profits from the defeat of the Western Witch turns out to be another version of the same flimflam man she met at home, a cynical politician who realizes that none of Dorothy's allies truly require anything that they didn't already have.

Although the 1939 version was not the first filmed adaptation of the book (the Internet Movie Database lists at least two silent movies, including one with Oliver Hardy as the Tin Man, that preceded Fleming's), it is without a doubt the definitive one.
Another aspect of The Wizard of Oz that immediately arrests the attention is the film's use of fl-and-white (actually brown-and-white) and the vivid hues of Technicolor.
It takes a rare movie to make a viewer even think of it as "fl and white" or "color," but, because The Wizard of Oz puts meaning into appearance (much like the recently-released Pleasantville), the nature of the visual composition become crucial.

An interesting sidenote: the plot of The Wizard of Oz has often been used, rightly or wrongly, as a Parable on Populism in the Gilded Age, to explain the political situation at the time of its writing, including the 1896 Presidential election, and the turn-of-the-century Populist movement.

Victor Fleming - The Wizard of Oz | Movie (1939)
Yet despite all this and some reviews that verged on the grudging, this fantastical story of a young girl and her dog, transplanted by a storm to the land of Oz and trying to get back to Kansas, remains the yardstick against which all other cinematic fairy tales must be measured.
A cartoon sequel, Journey Back to Oz, with Judy Garland's daughter Liza Minnelli providing the voice of Dorothy, was made in 1971; in 1978 Diana Ross starred in an all-fl grown-up version called The Wiz, and there had been a silent film of The Wizard of Oz in 1925.
The latter, lacking sound, was hardly in the same class and the other two can best be regarded as tributes, rather than rivals, to the 1939 picture.
