The Wonder Years was the creation of husband-and-wife producers Neal Marlens and Carol Black, who had worked on ABC’s hit family comedy Growing Pains.
Part of the show’s success is that it took normal slice-of-life incidents from real life and brought them to the small screen with a warmth and honesty seldom attempted in a family comedy.
The Wonder Years continued to focus on Kevin, his family and his friends with the same warmth and honesty that marked the show’s first six episodes.

BBC - Comedy - Guide - The Wonder Years
Shot on film, The Wonder Years was essentially a series of very watchable essays about middle-class suburban family life, and although it was set in the epochal late-1960s it could also hold true for any period.
In essence, then, The Wonder Years was not a million miles from the movie Summer Of '42, generating soul warmth rather than rip-snorting laughs.
The show ran in 'real time', its storylines spanning the five years that it was on air, beginning in 1968, when Kevin was a 12-year-old just starting out at Robert F Kennedy Junior High School, passing through to McKinley High School and then into young adulthood and summer jobs in 1973.
