Topic: The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm

CNS Movie Review: The Brothers Grimm
But, from that point on, this take on the lives of those fairy-tale-writing scribes couldn't be more different, as "The Brothers Grimm" (Dimension) is very much an adult fantasy, though a visually inventive, highly atmospheric one at that.
The brothers go from town to town in French-occupied Germany hoodwinking the superstitious 18th-century peasants into paying them exorbitant sums in return for sham ghostbustings of witches and the like.
The brothers report to the town of Marbaden, and discover the forest is under the thrall of an actual witch's curse, and that one by one the town's children are disappearing.

The elder brother, Jacob, studied at Marburg and at Paris, and in 1808 he was appointed librarian to Jerome Bonaparte, King of Westphalia.
Both the Grimms were dismissed in 1837 for joining in the protest against the abolition of the Constitution by the King of Hanover.
The two brothers, both learned in other branches of the literature of their own country, gained enduring fame, mostly from these stories--ostensibly written for the education of the young.

According to the MGM studio, Brothers Grimm will be a popular advantageous film full of mysterious myths and spectres with the leading characters of the Grimm brothers wandering round the villages collecting fairy tales and legends.

Children might be especially amused by the scene where one brother leans on a suit of armor, causing the entire suit to collapse.
A fictionalized account of the adult life of the Grimm Brothers, the story revolves around their transformation as writers of dull, patron-sponsered biographies to chroniclers of the world's great fairy tales.
All in all, "The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm" is a slightly odd curio, but suitable entertainment for the whole family.

James Sanford reviews The Brothers Grimm
Unlike the old Cinerama epic "The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm," which was supposedly based on the actual lives of the famed storytellers, Kruger's plot is purely fictitious.
The Grimms, bookish Jacob (Heath Ledger) and skeptic Will (Matt Damon), are a pair of phony exorcists, traveling through Europe and collecting fees from superstitious villagers who are eager to get rid of demons, trolls and witches.
The Grimms can avoid the gallows, however, if they can vanquish the sinister force that has been luring maidens into the cursed Forest of Marbaden, a place so uninviting that even most of the animals have moved out.

Closely compare Terry Gilliam's "The Brothers Grimm" with the 1962 Cinerama release "The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm" and you have an X-ray into how far irony and flip cheekiness have invaded the movies.
As designed by Gilliam's team (the Grimms are called Team Grimm in the dialogue), this is gothic comedy fortified by superstition.
When the Grimms enter into the woods, where maidens have been abducted by a queenly witch and kept spellbound in crypts guarded by horrors, the brothers must deal with dangers beyond their usual flip confection.

What the film fails to portray in any way is the fact the two brothers’ interest in fairy-tales was not some obsessive whim, but rather came from a scholarly interest in Teutonic folklore.

But his latest, The Brothers Grimm, is a great disappointment, though more entertaining than the dour 1962 The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm, one of the only two feature films shot in Cinerama.
The movie is apparently intended to contrast the rational French Enlightenment with the magic and mystery of German Romanticism by having the dreamy Jacob Grimm (Heath Ledger) and his more practical brother Will (Matt Damon) became the victims of the French forces occupying Germany during the Napoleonic War.
