Formed in Los Angeles in 1991, the Wondermints slowly built a reputation as a cornerstone in the city's pop underground.
When Brian Wilson enlisted the band for his surprising resurgence as a live performer, the Wondermints were exposed to the masses as the meat of his backing band.
Wilson again took the Wondermints out on tour in early 2004, debuting the lost Beach Boys masterpiece Smile over 30 years after the project was initially abandoned, and was so invigorated with the performances that he announced plans to release a re-recorded version of Smile with the Wondermints.

The news that Wilson and his backing band (based around American 1960s revivalists the Wondermints) were going to completely re-record and release Smile, after touring a completed version of it, was enough to cause an outbreak of mild hysteria.
The album's "concept" may be as baffling as ever (even Parks seems at a loss to explain precisely what the richly evocative imagery of his lyrics is evoking), but the music flows beautifully - no mean feat when it encompasses barbershop singing, acid rock, early pop, Hawaiian chanting and mock-religious plainsong.
On their own albums, the Wondermints tend towards a wearisome brand of wackiness, which must have been hard to keep in check, given the nature of Smile's music.

If Wondermints "only" recreated Wilson's complex aural tapestries (layers of fairground keyboards and vibes, coated with subtle, rich webs of guitar) so perfectly and effortlessly, they'd qualify as one of the best bands of the past decade.
This fourth Wondermints album conjures up the spirit of early 70s Beach Boys albums Surf's Up and Holland, on which the rest of the group ably filled the creative gap while Brian Wilson stayed in bed.

Although the Wondermints are the band who backed Brian Wilson on his orchestral PET SOUNDS tours of 1999-2000, the Los Angeles quartet aren't mere Wilson copyists.
On their 1995 debut, compiled from three earlier cassette-only releases, they actually don't sound much like Wilson at all, other than a vague similarity between "Tracy Hide" and "Caroline No." Most of THE WONDERMINTS is lightly orchestrated, vaguely psychedelic pop pitched somewhere between FOREVER CHANGES-era Love and the more pensive side of Big Star.
Singer-songwriters Darian Sahanaja and Nick Walusko seem more interested in moods than hooks, and so the subtle pleasures of the album might take a while to sink in, but when they do, you won't be able to forget them.
