  Queen: Fyfeopedia Music Reviews
Queen's second album of 1974, after May was struck down by illness and was unable to tour, it lacks the grandiosity of key Opera tracks like ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘The Prophet’s Song’, but it’s more even than its more celebrated followup, filled with inventive rockers and enjoyable ballad fragments.
Queen haven’t lost any of their grandeur, but the effect is less unified than previous; the gap between Mercury’s ballads and May’s rock songs is far more pronounced than on its predecessor.
Although Queen managed to squeeze out some pretty strong albums, especially towards the beginning of their career, this fourteen track LP compilation of their most famous songs remains their masterpiece, placing highlights such as 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'Another One Bites The Dust', 'We Are The Champions', and 'Fat Bottomed Girls' all in one place.

The British rock group Queen got its start in early 1971
The album wasn't a huge success, but Queen got a big break by opening for Mott The Hoople on the support tour; their 1974 follow-up, Queen II, was to be followed by a U.K. and U.S. tour, but May was hospitalized with hepatitis and many of the U.S. shows were canceled.
Though Queen was as popular as ever throughout the world, in the U.S. their popularity was swiftly declining.
Queen's much-anticipated 16th album, The Miracle, was released in May 1989 and entered the U.K. charts at No. 1.

The Daily Vault Album Reviews : The Works
But Queen, as they had been for their entire career, was still torn between being an all-out rock and roll band and trying to focus on the more gentle moments of the music.
The album's original closer, "Is This The World We Created...?", is one of the most beautiful songs the band ever wrote, with Brian May providing just the right touch on acoustic guitar.
Fact was, Queen was on a roll with this album, and I wish they had added some more songs to it to keep the momentum going.

 The Works album review
The sincere vocal harmonies during the rousing chorus are not as involved as earlier Queen arrangements, but again their relative crudeness is ideally suited to this no nonsense arrangement.
On the plus side, the band give their all, Brian’s guitar work is raunchy and melodic, Roger’s drumming remains potent but has unfortunately lost its characteristic edge and John’s bass playing is at its inventive best and really emphasises the mood of the compositions.
This is also Queen’s most commercial offering to date, and there is a feeling that every song has been composed with the intention of being released as a single, and in fact, every song has been released as either an A or B side, the only Queen album to achieve this feat.

The album 'The Works' was released 2 years after the poorly received 'Hot Space' but there were still tension in the Queen camp.
They worked my harder on this album, but this also caused friction, as they poured over the tuning of individual notes, Brian was a perfectionist, Roger just wanted to get things done and didn't want to know the difference between F and Fadd9 (see Radio Ga Ga).
There are a few tracks in the album which I consider to be my favourites, and this has to be one of Queens best albums of the 80's along with 'A Kind of Magic'.

Queen managed to swap a song to be included in the film (Freddie's first solo single Love Kills) for enough footage to produce Radio Ga Ga's music video.
From its name, The Works, through songs like this, the already mentioned Metropolis footage of Radio Ga Ga's video, mechanic wheels on the back cover, to the use of these on stage during The Works tour, this album is pretty much a conceptual one.
All in all, The Works is another excellent album that shows Queen's return to their traditional style not without bringing us new musical proposals at the same time.

Once you've seen Queen onstage, away from the cut and paste of the studio, it's painfully clear that "Sheer Heart Attack" is less a matter of slumming than of warfare among equals in incompetent musicianship.
The rest of side one uses the elaborate Led Zeppelin approach for which Queen is famous, but the songs go even further into punk sociology, reaching a peak with "Fight from the Inside," which seems nothing less than a Tory's sketch for a junta.
Queen's characteristic use of grandiosity rising from a basic rock lineup drives the group's latest LP through its soundtrack-like song structure.

 Queen History
Queen is a British rock band which came to popularity during the mid-1970s, and has amassed an enormous worldwide fanbase that continues to exist to this day.
During this time they recorded the album "The Works" and several members of the band explored side projects and solo work which constantly led to rumours that the band were going to split, rumours that would persist throughout the rest of their career.
Queen is remembered for its never-seen-before theatrics, showmanship, camp and bombast so much that critics have since classified the band as a major player in the evolution of rock music.

The Works is a rock album by English band Queen released in 1984.
Much had changed in the music world since their previous album "Hot Space", which was something of a commercial failure and a poorly received album by many fans.
It was the band's first album for EMI worldwide after the band nullified its recording deal with Elektra for the US, Canada, Australia and Japan and signed with EMI worldwide(they were on EMI since day one in Europe) and EMI's US affiliate Capitol Records in the US and Canada.

Aparently the concept of this album is the battle between humans and machines, this is reflected upon in the way that Queen's vocal and musical presence is in conflict with the synthesizers on the album.
Of course the album is dominated by those four massive hit singles, and while it is doubtless very unfair to criticise an album for it's success the fact is that for those already familiar with these songs there isn't a huge amount of interest left on this short album.
The album that followed this - Akind of Magic - is one of their worst studio albums, but 86 was the year dominated by their infamous stadium tour.

And rather than move in ever-widening spirals of bombast, they've trimmed a lot of the excess – mainly, the fat vibrato of Brian May's multitracked guitars and Freddie Mercury's overdubbed tabernacle choir of vocal effects.
What's left is a lean hard-rock sound, making The Works perhaps the first record to refute the maxim that the words Queen and listenable are, of necessity, mutually exclusive.
The Works is a royal feast of hard rock without that awful metallic aftertaste; as such, it might turn out to be the Led Zeppelin II of the Eighties.

Following the disappointing commercial performance of the dance-oriented Hot Space in 1982, Queen took 1983 off to get refocused and work on a follow-up that would put the band back on track.
While the songwriting had definitely improved on the resulting The Works in 1984, the album sonically lacked the punch of such earlier releases as News of the World and The Game (strangely, Hot Space even had a better overall sound).
Other highlights included the '50s-sounding "Man on the Prowl," the electronic experiment "Machines," the thunderous "Tear It Up," and a touching acoustic ballad, "Is This the World We Created...?" Perhaps with a more straight-ahead production (and a U.S. tour), The Works would have landed Queen back on the top of the charts stateside.
