THE world's newspapers enjoyed buoyant advertising sales in 2003 but overall reader numbers were in marginal decline, according to a report on the state of the industry delivered at the 57th annual World Newspaper Congress today.
Newspaper circulation increased in 2003 across 35 of the 208 countries studied with developing countries accounting for much of the growth, while a number of mature markets - notably in western Europe - registered a fall in circulation numbers.
The Norwegians remained the world's most avid news readers, followed by the Japanese, the Swedes and the Finns, according to the WAN study.

Newspaper coverage was even more geographically limited, focusing mostly on Western Europe, Russia, China and Japan.

The picketing came seven months after a gang of farmers staged a violent takeover of a warehouse belonging to the newspaper.

 City Newspaper: What in the world?
An astounding 97 out of the 99 World Series winners are from the US, and it'll be 98 out of 100 after this year.
It's laughable that American fans, media, and sports leagues bestow the title of "world champions" to their winners when the world is not well-represented in many of those sports.
As for the World Series and the world's interest in it, I went to websites of English newspapers in each of the top-10 cities and found little evidence that those places cared much about the games.
