While the most recent installment of the franchise, The World is Not Enough, does in fact follow this formula, it veers from other aspects of Bond convention that seems to be a portent of things to come in the Bond Universe.
The World is Not Enough’s plot manages to bring together all the factors of the usual 007 movies.
As the primary villain in The World is Not Enough, Robert Carlyle would seem to fit the character of Renard like a glove.

‘The World is Not Enough’ is a very good, albeit quite ridiculous, action film that builds to sensational proportions.
There are moments in ‘The World is Not Enough’ that come close to relying too much on the old formula and not enough on creativity, but these moments are largely overshadowed by the movie’s exciting action scenes that are generally much more interesting than the human developments.
This is the closest thing you’ll find to cinematic take away: you know what you’re ordering, you know what you’re going to get and there’s a slightly different taste each time.

The choice of Richards, young enough to have played high school students in her two most recent films (Wild Things and Drop Dead Gorgeous), to portray a nuclear physicist is brilliant in its absurdity.
For Bond fans, The World Is Not Enough is an enjoyable, albeit forgettable, night at the movies, but it is not recommended for non-fans.

"The World Is Not Enough" is the 195th, er, I mean, 19th Bond movie and although it has a few moments of slow going, it delivers everything we've come to expect from the series.
Interestingly enough, it was directed by Michael Apted, who has been known previously as directing moderately budgeted films(the excellent and overlooked "Extreme Measures") or documentary features.
"The World Is Not Enough" has a different tone to it; a giant movie, certainly, but a less glitzy and more straightforward one.

James Bond (Pierce Brosnan, back for his third go in the role) spends much of The World is Not Enough on the ragged edge of anger.
As plots go, it pales in comparison to some of the world domination tales of old, but Marceau at least gives a passionate performance, oozing amorality and a firm conviction in her own irresistibility.
Oddly, the movie seems to have had a foreshadowing of Llewelyn's death; not only did he introduce his eventual successor, R (John Cleese), but his final scene with Bond smacked eerily of a goodbye.

Garbage's theme song is petty good, with Shirley Manson's vocals sounding as though she were born to croon Bond theme songs (succeeding where Sheryl Crow failed in TND).
While "The World Is Not Enough" is a fine song and a Bondish one at that-- especially with the wise decision to use Don Black's lyrics-- the rest of the score is mostly just noise.
