The World Needs a Hero is hard, fast, loud and progressive -- a reiteration of their stand as a metal band.
This album is a strong and firm attempt at reaffirming their spot at the top of the heavy metal hierarchy and they seem to have done an amazing job of it.

 Blistering.com :: Music :: Reviews :: Megadeth - "The World Needs A Hero"
Megadeth’s ninth album features exactly one song about finding a hero (the title track), but many more about exposing the villains: cold-blooded thieves, countries that hang their soldiers out to dry, or just ex-girlfriends who still want to be friends.
In Megadeth’s world, that could be anyone, although given the quartet’s recent history, a few concrete examples come to mind.
At this stage in the band’s career, then, The World Needs A Hero becomes a survival record with a survivor’s goals: put Megadeth back on the metal radar, erase the memory of Risk and reconvert old-school fans who probably stopped listening to the band after Countdown To Extinction (1992).

Although it lacks the awesome power of 1993's masterpiece Countdown to Extinction, The World Needs a Hero does not fail to send your head into violent motion.
On the songs "Dread" and "The Fugitive Mind" one can't help but be reminded of Countdown's "Sweating Bullets." And on the track "Return to Hanger" Megadeth revisits Rust in Peace's "Hanger 18," proving the nay sayers wrong who have speculated that Megadeth could no longer play at warp speed.
So crank up your stereo and prepare to terrify the elderly, Megadeth is back with a new axe to grind.

The World Needs A Hero is an album by Megadeth, released in 2001.
It was marked as a welcome, if not mediocre, return to Megadeth's more heavy metal roots, after the commercial rock style of their previous releases, Youthanasia, Cryptic Writings and especially Risk.
"The World Needs A Hero" and "1000 Times Goodbye" features the voice of Heather Keckler (Miss Arizona 2000 and Megadeth.com's "She-Wolf")

While World Needs A Hero is more commercial and mature than such unbridled early releases as So Far, So Good, So What, this follow up to the poorly received Risk finds Megadeth returning mostly to their metallic roots.
Although Cryptic Writings and to a larger extent Risk were seen as deviations from typical Megadeth style, The World Needs A Hero is a return to form for metal titans Megadeth.
The World Needs A Hero is somewhere in between Rust In Peace and Countdown To Extinction in style, combining the in-your-face riffs and solo's from the former and the sophistication and thought-provoking lyrics of the latter.

The World Needs A Hero is not a bad album (no it’s not) but it’s not as good as Rust In Peace or Countdown To Extinction or Youthanasia or any of the other albums (except for RISK which was a real music-potatoe and Cryptic Writings which wasn’t the best Megadeth could give to the world).
I mean, The World Needs A Hero has really NOT much to tell us when it comes to the lyrics part.

One piece of evidence indicating that 'The World Needs A Hero' is an album geared toward die-hard lovers of Megadeth's early days is the inclusion of "Return To Hangar." Fans continually asked the band for a "sequel" of sorts to the classic 1990 album 'Rust In Peace'.

CD-Review: MEGADETH - "The world needs a hero"
"The world needs a hero" nennt sich das neueste Produkt aus dem Hause MEGADETH, auf dem sich der Metal-Welt wohl berühmtester Rotschopf glücklicherweise vom Industrial-Wahn des Vorgängers "Risk" verabschiedet hat.
Wer jedoch bereits nach "Rust in peace" der Band den Rücken gekehrt hat, wird auch mit "The world needs a hero" nicht wieder zum eingefleischten "'DETH-Metaller" mutieren.
Richtig nervig wird "The world needs a hero" allerdings, wenn MEGADETH wie beim Titeltrack hoffentlich zum letzten Mal pseudo-moderne "Risk"-Töne anschlagen oder mit "Promises" und "Losing my senses" fade Slow-Songs anstimmen.

ast spring, Megadeth released "The World Needs a Hero." As with many '80s heavy-metal bands (not to be confused with hair metal), Megadeth's sound has become less thrashy and more hard rock.
Despite a seemingly ever-changing lineup, the band's founders Dave Mustaine and David Ellefson have survived nearly two decades to become one of the biggest metal bands in the world.
Mustaine's song-writing ability is superb, he just needs some vocal alterations and material of his own.
