The World of Suzie Wong - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The World of Suzie Wong is a 1957 novel written by Richard Mason, which has since been adapted into both a play and a film.
The book is about an English artist, Robert Lomax, who visits Hong Kong and falls in love with the mysterious prostitute Suzie Wong.
As she is mysterious he decides to follow her and finds she has a child, but the child is killed in an accident.

However, when Suzie tells Lomax that it was her first time, pretending to be a virgin before her first sexual encounter with him, the audience understands this to be partly an emotional defense to the news that one of her white clients has forsaken her to run back to his wife.
Suzie knew this and deliberately orchestrated this lie, boasting of the fact and sarcastically pitying her friends that they do not have a lover attentive enough to beat them up as well.
Although we never see Suzie being beaten by Lomax, it is sufficient in terms of constructing the fantasy of the Oriental Woman that she valorizes, glorifies and prostrates herself for physical abuse in the hands of her white knight.

The movie focuses more and more on Robert and Suzie as a couple, and, bit by bit, Suzie becomes less of a stereotypical bar girl and more and more of a human being who behaves unexpectedly.
In a complex way, Suzie, and also little Winston, act as muses for Robert, and his own art becomes more inspired and interesting because of them.
Suzie also benefits from her love for Robert and shows some real emotion for him rather than her usual play acting.

At first we are presented in 'Suzie Wong' a stereotypical view of happy little hookers in the Wan Chai district of Hong Kong.
In Suzie's case she must compartmentalize her feeling into body, love, and soul and thus protect herself by pretending that she is the daughter of a rich merchant rather than a Wan Chai bargirl.

What follows is a dramatic, but sweet and poignant story of culture clash, and wonderful romance, as Robert tries to reconcile his growing fondness for Suzie, with the morals and bigotry of the world he comes from.
Suzie's pals Gwennie Lee(Jacqui Chan), Minnie Ho(Yvonne Shima), and Wednesday Lu(Lier Hwang), will also delight you and steal your heart with their own unique charms.
While The World of Suzie Wong can be patronizing and has some dubious interpretations of Chinese manners and mores, it's also sophisticated (in a censored sort of way) about love, sex, and social pressure.

What matters is that after the film's release the most superficial (and offensive) aspects of the Suzie Wong character single-handedly usurped the image of Asian womanhood in the western imagination.
Its spectacular success may be Suzie Wong's greatest sin, the reason that the name still carries a strongly negative emotional charge.
In the Asian consciousness the two most offensive images are Suzie Wong and Madame Butterfly because they degrade Asian women as prostitutes and insult Asian men by implying that only Caucasian men are worthy objects of love.

The World of Suzie Wong (1960): William Holden, Nancy Kwan, Sylvia Sims, Michael Wilding - PopMatters Film Review
Suzie Wong helped set the standard for a whole genre of representation: the duplicitous, hypersexual, yet childlike Asian woman in need of rescue from the vicissitudes of circumstance (typically: poverty, depravity, war).
Suzie takes up with an affluent Brit (Michael Wilding) instead, only to be unceremoniously dumped, arousing Robert's jealousy and pity to the point that he confesses his love.
This sentiment is borne out in a subsequent scene, when he presents Suzie with a traditional Chinese costume that he swears was once worn by an "empress." Exhorting her to try it on, he boasts that she's "going to make him famous," since paintings depicting "traditional" Chinese are much more saleable.

dOc DVD Review: The World of Suzie Wong (1960)
Back in 1960, the world of Suzie Wong may have seemed exotic, titillating, even a little shocking, but global awareness and a severe loosening of social mores in the intervening 44 years has turned Richard Quine's film into just another turgid romance with Asian overtones.
He offers Suzie a job as his model, and begins to casually date her, all the while enduring the consternation and disapproving glances of the prejudiced British elite whom he's courting as future clients.
But over time, as secrets are revealed and he comes to terms with the world of Suzie Wong, Robert gives in to his feelings, and must decide whether to follow his heart or the dictates of a close-minded society.

"Suzie Wong" was controversial at the time because of the interracial romance between Kwan and William Holden.

Ah, "Suzie Wong." Even just her character's name itself is a rallying cry for those against racial stereotypes in films.
She's Suzie Wong, a sexy and seductive Chinese prostitute who's known as "The most popular girl in Hong Kong." As Lomax rents a hotel in the red-light Wan-Chai district, he begins to realize that this "respectable hotel" is nothing more than a front for prostitution.
Uh, ok. Suzie Wong may be a stereotypical character, but Nancy Kwan's ability to transform from a casual everyday woman by day, into an alluring seductress by night is something absolutely memorable.

In many ways The World of Suzie Wong is the culmination of the international romantic melodrama, a sub-genre that had been popular in American cinema (and which quickly spread throughout the world) since the advent of CinemaScope in 1953.
Though a long way from the frankness of films made later in the decade, The World of Suzie Wong is admirably frank for its time, with the title character a far removed from the cliched hooker with a heart of gold.
The World of Suzie Wong is a soaper but it's a good one thanks largely to the filmmakers' terrific travelogue-like use of scenic Hong Kong locales, and their expert artistry in the studio.

Leave your niggling, knee-jerk political correctness at the door and enjoy 1960's The World of Suzie Wong for what it is — a charming multi-cultural romance that was surprisingly daring for its time.
Suzie Wong is a gorgeous movie, shot in Technicolor on location in teeming circa-1960 Hong Kong.
As Suzie gets the bargain-bin treatment here, there are no extras — considering that this popular film was so controversial on its release with its depiction of interracial romance and prostitution, and later so sharply criticized for contributing to stereotypes about Asian women, something on the disc addressing this would have been a nice bonus.

The nice thing about The World of Suzie Wong is that the view of interracial romance is in sharp contrast to most previous screen treatments of the theme.
There are hilarious moments involving the lies Suzie tells to gain the respect of her prostitute pals and her drunken suitor, Ben (Michael Wilding, Stage Fright).
Despite the lack of extras, however, The World of Suzie Wong is a wonderful emotional experience.

After resisting temptations of the flesh and giving her the brush for an admirable period, Holden eventually succumbs to the yen.

"It'd be laughable if it weren't so filthy!" rants one character in The World of Suzie Wong, but au contraire, this costly 1960 film is laughable because it's so filthy.
When penniless artist William Holden, who lives atop a sleazy Hong Kong brothel, spies Kwan in the building's pick-up bar, we're told she is the "most popular girl--got sex appeal!"
