Encounter at Farpoint - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was originally shown on August 28, 1987, and was the first new live-action episode of Star Trek to have been broadcast since 1969.
It was twice the length of a normal episode, and in repeats is often shown in a re-edited two-part form.
The episode features a cameo appearance by DeForest Kelley as a 137-year old Doctor Leonard McCoy, thus starting a tradition that the first episode of each new Star Trek series includes an appearance by a prominent character from a previous Trek series (or movie, as was the case with Star Trek: Enterprise).

Analysis of their ship shows that they cannot break through the shields and disable the particle emitter in one volley, but Geordi suggests that they might be able to knock out the generator pathways supplying the device if they modify the phasers.

Since the TNG series, it seemed that a Star Trek series really became a Star Trek series and accepted by fans once there was at least one tie in episode with the original TOS characters.
TNG had McCoy in the pilot episode and Scotty in 'Relics', DS9 used special effects footage in their Trials and Tribble-ations episode to interact with the TOS characters, and Voyager had Sulu in 'Flashback'.
Since the TNG series, it seems like that it has taken about three to four seasons for the spin offs to find their ground and be successful.

This episode also reveals that Starfleet and the Federation are vulnerable to invasion by a powerful entity, one that would continue to haunt them for several years to come.
In this episode, we get some backstory on Lieutenant Miles O'Brien and how he served with Captain Maxwell, a renegade Starfleet officer who is attacking Cardassian ships, thus threatening a fragile peace between the Federation and the Cardassian Empire.
The Host is yet another of the fourth season episodes of TNG that paved the way for several species and relationships that would carry on far into later episodes and other series.

After the second season episode "Tribunal", "Defiant" was the first to address the Maquis issue, that startet earlier on at season two, in the episode "The Maquis".
The episode isn't very rich in the plot department, being more baced on conflicts between characters and the political aspects of the series, being more of a cat-and-mouse kind of episode.

But she was pregnant, and depending on the time elapsed between Season 7 and Generations as well as the duration of the Klingon prenatal period, the child may or may not have been born.
That was probably the best episode of the first season of TNG and it took a bold step in storytelling and basically said, "We're not afraid to push the limits of what we do."

Gul Macet was played by Marc Alaimo, who also played the first TNG Romulan we ever saw, T'Bok, in "The Neutral Zone"--and was very recognizable as such, at least by voice.
I don't know if this was intended (probably), and the writers/producers certainly couldn't have known for certain that this show would be airing in the middle of a war, but I think it brought out a couple of points well worth listening to.
