Topic: Banded Wren

  Wren: Dictionary definition and more
Wrens are members of a New World Passerine bird family Troglodytidae containing 55 species.
Wrens get their scientific name from the tendency of some species to forage in dark crevices like troglodytes.
Only one wren, Troglodytes troglodytes, known as the Winter Wren in North America, also occurs in Europe, where it is commonly known simply as the Wren.

Life History of the Cactus Wren. Part VI: Competition and Survival
We saw disputes occasionally among the wrens themselves for possession of a nest at roosting time, usually when the fledg- lings approached independence, and now and then we noted that they even went so far as to eject one of their own kind that had usurped a nest.
In the concluding part of our study of the Cactus Wren (see earlier papers, 1957- 1962), Carnpylorttyncttus brunneicapillus, we are concerned with the effects of the physical environment upon the wrens, their conflicts with other birds, the enemies they faced, and finally the survival of the Cactus Wrens in our limited area of research.
In summer wrens frequently move slowly on the shady ground or in the lower branches of a mesquite tree, holding their bills open a quarter of an inch, as though panting, while they peer into the tangle of shrubbery for food.

According to European folklore, the Wren is the King of the Birds.
The wren also features in the legend of Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr, who supposedly was betrayed by the noisy bird as he attempted to hide from his enemies.
The tradition, and the significance of the wren as a symbol and sacrifice of the old year, is discussed in Sir James Frazer's The Golden Bough.

Phylogeny and Comparative Biology of Wrens   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
At least three genera of wrens (Campylorhynchus, Cinnycerthia, and Cyphorhinus; follow this link for a summary of evidence for cooperative breeding in wrens) show good evidence for the occurrence of cooperative breeding in one or more species, but relationships among these genera were unknown.
Thus, wrens could represent as many as four origins of cooperative breeding (and thus four independent chances to test potential correlates), or as few as one, depending on their interrelationships.
Song use by the Carolina wren has been studied by Eugene Morton (now at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center), and Sandra Vehrencamp's group is pursuing studies of a non-duetting wren (the banded wren Thryothorus pleurostictus).

Banded wren males are highly territorial and appear to counter-sing with each other extensively during aggressive interactions.
Banded wrens appear to treat repertoire matches as a non-threatening, but "directed" signal that indicates the intention to continue interacting.
Banded wrens occasionally create compound songs, as "Yoda" has done in his first song, below.
