The American Experience/The Wright Stuff/About The Program
On August 8, 1908, at a racetrack outside Paris, Wilbur Wright executed what was, for him, a routine flight: a smooth take-off banking into a couple of tight circles, ending in a perfect landing.
The Wright brothers seemed like the most ordinary men in the world, but they were brilliant, self-taught inventors who made a formidable team: Orville was the born engineer, Wilbur the visionary.
Finally, in 1908, the Wrights' claim reached President Theodore Roosevelt, and the brothers signed a deal for $25,000 to build and fly one of their machines for the US Army Signal Corps.

"The Wright Stuff" by John B. Judis
Wright's work is an attempt to return to Hegel and Marx's progressive theory of history by drawing upon a dissident school of cultural anthropology and the work of evolutionary biologists, like Richard Dawkins, who have tried to extend the principles of natural selection to history.
Wright borrows from Dawkins in The Selfish Gene the concept of a meme---a unit of knowledge analogous to a gene---whose diffusion depends on its utility to human survival.
Wright would deny it, but his speculations are a variation on William Paley's argument that if history, like the watch, has a design and structure, then someone must have designed and structured it.

Wright, who made his debut July 21 against the Expos, finished his inaugural season hitting.293 with 14 homers and 40 RBI in 263 at-bats - too few at-bats to merit consideration for the NL Rookie of the Year award, too many to be eligible this season.
Wright exhaled for effect as he read off Bay's statistics, though Wright actually had comparable numbers to the Pittsburgh rookie's post-All-Star break stats (.270, 14 homers, 43 RBI in an identical 263 at-bats).
Wright also was one of the few established players to attend the voluntary January minicamp.

Los Angeles Business Journal: The Wright Stuff - replica of the Wright Flyer being constructed
The actual Wright Flyer, which Cherne says shaped the past century as much as nuclear power and the transistor did, is on display at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The AIAA's replica taking shape in El Segundo is scheduled to be complete in July 2002.
Because the Wright brothers worked from designs in their heads, the AIAA group obtained copies of the blueprints later drawn from the completed aircraft by the National Air and Space Museum and the British Museum in London.
Per order of the brothers, the British Museum displayed the Wright Flyer for decades and only turned it over to the Smithsonian in 1948, after the agency, for the firs time, publicly acknowledged that the brothers were the first to fly, said Cherne.

But what they did know carried a powerful momentum because it was combined with their sense of the next thing, whether it was a physical principle of aeronautics or an understanding of what the airplane meant.
Had the Wright brothers' genius been merely talent they might have been blinded by the sheer sensation of the first thing (their initial achievement) and not even thought of the next.
