Right off the bat, "The Yeomen of the Guard, or, The Merryman and His Maid" has all the great Gilbert & Sullivan trademarks: elaborate ado about the very improbable, fueled by misunderstandings, eccentric characters, fast action and zany complications.

But at least there's still The Yeomen of the Guard, enduringly popular and now receiving an eight-week London run courtesy of the D'Oyly Carte company.
It is this that he and WS Gilbert considered to be their best piece of work together, and it is probably no coincidence that, eager to be taken seriously, they favoured the darkest of their operettas.
Nor is the Yeomen one of GandS's more satirical works so, while there are some fine Gilbertian gags, there's not much opportunity for inserting scathing, topical jokes.

"Yeomen of the Guard," now playing in an excellent production at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, stands out among the Gilbert and Sullivan works.
It is the most complex in plot, the most serious in musical style and, without sacrificing any of its comic verve, the most ambiguous in its mandatory happy ending.
Catherine Huntress-Reeve conducts a sensitive, musically alert performance and Ray Cullom's adept stage direction unfolds the complex plot with exemplary clarity.

"The Yeomen of the Guard" is a Gilbert and Sullivan comic operetta that features a jester, but nothing's particularly jolly about how this plot plays out.
Falsely convicted of sorcery by an unseen cousin, Col. Fairfax will be sprung by his onetime commanding officer, Sgt. Meryll (William Neely) of the Yeomen of the Guard — basically, the monarch's wardens — and the sergeant's children, infatuated Phoebe and newly appointed tower guard Leonard.
It is dark and confusing, in contrast to the bright red yeomen uniforms most of the men's chorus wears.
