The Young Ones is a comedy classic and one of my all time favourites.
As I was a teenager during the Young Ones era, I not only love the humorous aspects but can also draw direct parallels with the dark and oppressive undertones that are constantly present throughout the series.
I would say that The Young Ones is just as much a social commentary as it is a comedy and a terrific one at that.

The Young Ones (TV series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Young Ones was a British sitcom about four students sharing a house: cheerfully violent punk rocker Vyvyan (Adrian Edmondson), shrill friendless anarchist Rick (Rik Mayall), longsuffering hippy Neil (Nigel Planer), and the undersized Mike (Christopher Ryan).
The theme tune to the series was the cast singing the Cliff Richard song "Young Ones"; there are also many references to Richard, who is Rick's idol, an ironic contrast to Richard's "old granny" image.
This was atypical of many sitcom endings, as it ended the show's popularity on a high, without a loss of good ideas, storylines, or jokes, and allowed the cast and writers to move on to new projects before they became too typecast.

The format has never been matched - the sudden imaginative changes of plot, numerous cameo appearances in the "interludes" - this allowed the variety that a sketch show format often provides, but avoided the patchiness that format provides by keeping everything interwoven with the reality of their student lives.
