BBC - Comedy Guide - The Young Ones
The premise was simple: the series depicted a flatshare from hell, with four anarchic, lazy, dysfunctional students living on the breadline and hating and abusing one another.
The Young Ones found a cult audience right away - students and young adults in the 16-25-year-old band - but others were slow to catch on and it wasn't until repeat screenings that the series began to amass a sizeable audience.
As a result, the second TV series was more confident and assured than the first and was also treated more seriously, even meriting the honour of a Radio Times front cover.

The Young Ones (TV Series) (1982) - FilmAffinity
There are no real stories, only a succession of often hysterically funny scenes as ingenious gags collide with deliberately corny lines, cartoon-like ultra-violence, pop music breaks, surreal interludes with characters ranging from the Three Bears to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and gross-out moments based on various bodily functions and substances.
In retrospect The Young Ones is cheerfully un-politically correct in a way which may shock more now than 20 years ago; certainly some of the insults and drug-taking would have trouble getting on TV today.
The first series was followed by a second equally hilarious series; Mayall and Edmondson played essentially similar characters in Filthy, Rich and Catflap (1987) and Bottom (1991-5).
