  Miniature Horse Stallion Fertility
Young, developing stallions have a number of factors that reduce their general fertility from that of the adult.
The bottom line is that young stallions are not able to breed mares at the same frequency as adult stallions and maintain fertility.
If a farm ends up with a young stallion that is attracting a lot of attention, keep in mind that it is probably good business to be somewhat conservative about booking mares to him when he is young.

Ownership of Oldenburg stallions by private breeders, who can afford the best and most expensive, has resulted in many mare owners from the surrounding Hannoverian breeding area bringing their horses to Oldenburg stallions despite the fact that breeding fees are often as much as twice those offered by government owned Hannoverians.
During this training period, under the control of a government-employed rider, the young stallion's character, disposition, willingness to work, and temperament are carefully observed and noted.

Only stallions that pass these tests are registered in the stallion book 1 in their respective breed registers (for example Hanoverian stud book, Trakehner stud book, Holsteiner stud book etc.) To be eligible to take part in the SPT, the young stallions have to be licenced as 2 1/2 year-olds.
Each stallion will get a final result, which states his overall mark, his mark in the dressage part, his mark in the jumping part, and he will be ranked according to his total mark.
So for example, let's say there were 20 stallions performing thtest in Adelheidsdorf, and stallion x was best in his jumping, but performed badly in his rideability test, on the overall result he will be 1st in jumping, and 20th placerideability, and will finish up possibly 10th in his total mark.

Feh - Relationships and Communication in Socially Natural Horse Herds
In family forming equids, stallions are known to actively defend all members of their band against predators, and the permanent bond between stallions and mares in these societies may well have evolved as a response to large and cooperatively hunting predators which traditionally don’t occur in the habitats of the other equid species (Feh, 1994).
Young horses play with each other and address submissive gestures towards the adults, adult horses establish a dominance hierarchy, adult stallions drive their families together.
Stallion fights are characterised by bites, rearing and chases, while mares kick at each other when asserting their rank position (Wells, 1978).

If you are totally unfamiliar with handling breeding stallions, ask around and find a breeder whom you respect who will allow you to watch their breeding routine, so that you know what to expect.
In some cases, a stallion may have to stand at a trainer's facility; if this is the case, send him to the trainer well before breeding so that he is acclimated and does not associate traveling with breeding.
Some young stallions are surprisingly clumsy in their first breeding attempts, and many mares lose patience quickly with such ineptness.

To encourage more stud colt owners to present their young stallion on this basis, the Committee decided to allow these stallions to be judged at a mare site with less than five judges on a pass/fail basis.
Others argued that the breeding permit be two tiered so that young stallions currently excelling in the sport would have the opportunity to qualify as long as they are competing, while older stallions could be judged on their lifetime accomplishments.
As always, a stallion would only have to comply with the performance standards in effect in the year that the stallion was approved for a temporary breeding permit when it was first presented, irrespective of whether it was a preliminary or final approval.
