  Notes on The Gaze
Whilst these notes are concerned more generally with ‘the gaze’ in the mass media, the term originates in film theory and a brief discussion of its use in film theory is appropriate here.
Traditional films present men as active, controlling subjects and treat women as passive objects of desire for men in both the story and in the audience, and do not allow women to be desiring sexual subjects in their own right.
Both Kaplan and Kaja Silverman (1980) argued that the gaze could be adopted by both male and female subjects: the male is not always the controlling subject nor is the female always the passive object.

 eye and gaze
The term "gaze" is broadly used by media theorists to refer both to the ways in which viewers look at images of people in any visual medium and to the gaze of those depicted in visual texts.
Several key forms of gaze can be identified in photographic, filmic or televisual tests, or in figurative graphic art based on who is doing the looking: the spectator's gaze, the intra-diegetic gaze, the direct or extra-diegetic address to the viewer, and the look of the camera.
She argues that the operations of the gaze in a "display culture" in which the presentation of the female sitter with "an averted eye and a face available to scrutiny" served the needs of a strongly male-dominated society in which brides and wives were visible emblems of status and property exchange.

 ISL eye gaze tracking
A person's gaze direction is determined by two factors: the orientation of the head, and the orientation of the eyes.
While the orientation of the head determines the overall direction of the gaze, the orientation of the eyes determines the exact gaze direction and is limited by the head orientation.
Many eye gaze tracking methods rely on intrusive techniques such as measuring the reflection of some light (usually infrared light) that is shone onto the eye, measuring the electric potential of the skin around the eyes or applying special contact lenses that facilitate eye gaze tracking.

 Coordinating Turn-Taking with Gaze
Beattie [2] found that gaze's role in turn-taking is context-specific: when the overall level of gaze is low, as in conversations between strangers [10] or when the discussion topic imposes a high cognitive load on the conversants, gaze plays a more significant role.
Gaze is momentarily mutual, after which the other conversant breaks mutual gaze and begins to speak.

ESRC Society Today - R000239930 - Children's eye gaze: benefits of averting gaze and cues to comprehension
Gaze aversion is potentially a useful cue for teachers since it gives a non-verbal indication of a child's level of understanding and concentration.
Teachers and other professionals must be proficient in 'reading' children's gaze aversion in conjunction with other cues, although they should bear in mind that the reason for this behaviour changes with age.
The findings are based on observations of the gaze patterns of children aged from 4 - 8 years when they were asked verbal and arithmetical questions of varying levels of difficulty.

Images - The Feminine Gaze in Notorious and The Paradine Case
With a male gaze, the camera encourages the spectator to view the action from a man's point of view (a voyeur), while a woman, an object of desire, performs for this gaze (an exhibitionist).
In these films, Hitchcock's female gaze may be as objectifying and controlling of the man as a male gaze is to a woman, while in other cases it exists as a knowing, patient and protective gaze.
With Hitchcock's fascination with the voyeuristic gaze of the spectator, it would be expected that he would have found a way for his camera's gaze to reinforce this feminine perspective and power.

Phase plane stability is based on the variance (the standard deviation squared) in displacement and velocity; therefore, the lower the phase plane gaze stability value, the more the data cluster together, signifying less deviation from the target upon which subjects were to foveate.
Individuals with vestibulopathy have greater gaze stability during sitting or standing in place as compared to locomotion, probably because locomotion involves high frequency head rotations, ranging up to 8 Hz with harmonic components up to 20 Hz which may produce considerable gain and phase changes that cause gaze instability.
Decreased gaze stability in elders and subjects with vestibular hypofunction may account for falls and postural imbalance in these populations while carrying out day-to-day functional activities, and these data clearly suggest one mechanism responsible for decreased eye-head coordination leading to retinal slip and oscillopsia among subjects with vestibulopathy.

 The male and female gaze
The concept of gaze (often also called the gaze), in analysing visual media, is one that deals with how an audience views other people presented.
The concept of the gaze became popular with the rise of postmodern philosophy and social theory and was first discussed by 1960s French intellectuals, namely Foucault's description of the medical gaze and Lacan's analysis of the gaze's role in the mirror stage development of the human psyche.
The account of 'the male gaze' as a structuring logic in Western visual culture became controversial in the early 1980s, as it made no room for the female spectator nor for a female gaze.

ESRC Society Today - R000223638 Early Imitation and Gaze Following
These two elements may be a key to the development of social integration, in particular the ability to understand the intentions of other people, which is thought to be linked to the social and linguistic impairments characteristic of autism.
Infants tended to acquire gaze following first, then they learned to turn their head towards a sound and finally to show a preference for looking at people rather than objects.
Although gaze following is not related to early imitation, it is related to visual and auditory attention and babies tend to perform gaze following before they perform these other tasks.
